LINK

I'm mainly just posting this for the following quote

quote:

It will be the first strike for Kisha Rivera, 41, a mother of four who lives in Chicago's Albany Park neighborhood and earns $10.50 an hour working full-time as a cabin cleaner for Scrub.

Rivera moved to Chicago this year from Puerto Rico, where she had been working as a cook for $7.25 an hour, in hopes of finding better pay and opportunity.

"But once you're here you realize how expensive it is to live here," said Rivera, whose paycheck has to cover her two younger daughters, aged 16 and 19, as well as herself. She doesn't get health benefits or paid sick days and relies on public assistance through Illinois' Link program.

Why should the people of Illinois be subsidizing an immigrant (legal or illegal, who knows?) who is earning $10.50 an hour full time in an unskilled job? When did the United States become a charity?

Why aren't her 16 and 19 year old daughter out working to help pay their way?

Why are you so calloused against American citizens?

Something that makes America great is its ability to help impoverished citizens work hard to get back on their feet. We absolutely should be a charitable nation towards our own people.

Then move back to PR or to a city that doesn't rank among the top 10 in the US for cost of living.

Isn't she supposed to have health care mandated by the federal government, ACA?

We should!

Too bad taxing people and giving it to others isn't charity.

How could anyone be dumb enough to think that Chicago is cheaper for a completely unskilled laborer than Puerto Rico?

I know some Puerto Ricans (and BTW, they are US citizens, it's a US Territory and you don't need a passport to go there). Their economy is shot to hell, I imagine people are trying to go somewhere for jobs.

I will fault the Puerto Ricans and Chicago for continuing to elect people and supporting a party that has not helped their plight.
