As it turns out, the Army had a chance to do away with the Marine Corps entirely. They passed on it, not for lack of malice, but for lack of being not very canny players. The question at the beginning of the 20th century: Did the Army want a role in seizing advanced bases for the Navy? No. The Army passed on that. The Marines took that ball and ran with it. "Soldiers of the Sea" is a term of art, and one I have always liked.

Marines rarely salute uncovered. Rarely inside. And never in an area of hostilities. The exceptions are limited.
You have no idea what you're talking about. Like most peacetime military persons who like to make a big deal out of their service. Usually the first ones to start vomiting when the shooting starts. And get fragged if they get in the way.

This Army guy at 3rd MarDiv Division Schools saluted me once in my office - he was uncovered. I just nodded.

The Marine Corps is very glad to have whatever exposure that sort of thing brings.
I am not sure when it changed, but the Army had that turf at one point.
