The critical fact is that defense spending comprises over half of all discretionary spending.
Which my previous graph showed pales in comparison to SS and entitlement spending. Military spending is literally a third of what we spend on entitlements.
We could multiply our military by three and equal what we spend on entitlements. It's out of control.

Well most people on the board are trump supporters. Trump wants to raise the budget
The infrastructure and even the wall, I'm okay with.
Increasing military spending is silly.

Yet, people on here celebrate cutting some small potato programs as if it is some kind of victory. The three areas pictured above dominate our spending yet no one wants to touch them. We are fricked.
One of those is not like the other ones...

One needs to be reduced. The other two need to be completely eliminated.

I believe repaying the debt starts with cutting non-essential functions. Arts? Sure cut it, but 1B is nothing. Do we really need all the equipment? Do we really need all the personnel? I read that even if we cut military spending by HALF, we are still the largest spenders? There you go folks, you want lower taxes? You want to pay debts? Cut the military.
There are 3.5 million people working in the defense industry and those jobs support another 3 million workers in ancillary industries.
Cut Military spending by 50% and 3+ million people will lose their jobs.
No politician is ready for that shite storm.

Do you actually attend or have attended A&M? alum? How can you ask these questions and not know anything about the Corp, and traditions at A&M and the thousands of former students who have paid ultimate price for our freedoms.?? Sounds like you are a UT Austin fan..

I agree with that. There are jobs that we can cut from the military. My thoughts are mostly focused on the Marine Corps because it's familiar.

Military spending isn't the biggest. Where did you get your inofrmation?
Medicare and Medicade-$831 Billion
Military and Homeland Security-$737 Billion
Granted, these figures are from 2009....

But military "clearly the largest piece"? You were only off by $100 Billion dollars (That's just to get even...then whatever amount would have made it "clearly the largest piece"

Fair enough. The dems have been clamoring for infrastructure for years... Im down. Im just confused about the fact that conservatives have been complaining about deficit for years against Obama. And yet on their turn they go deficit neutral.

Really?
1. How many years did Obama raise the budget?
2. Did you complain about Obama raising the budget?
3. Why not? (See? I already knew the answers to questions 1 and 2.)

If I were making that decision, it'd be the Navy.

To be fair, this kind of thing is said about every industry when cuts are discussed.

Considering they're the smallest, you would be correct.
