Companies like Toyota, Mercedes, Tyson Foods and BMW are constantly being lured away by other southern states like MS, AL, GA and SC. Why is that? How does the state go about getting more corporate trophies?

I'll hang up and listen.

Corrupt politicians, shitty democratic ratio, largely uneducated workforce. Half the state population derives their value in life based on how many deer they kill this year.

People do not want to live there that are not originally from there. There are no real cities with good infrastructure.

Well - I didn't want to float the obvious, but there it is. Are things really that screwed up in BR. Are "the elected ones" just clueless and/or unqualified? Is this EWE's legacy?

All the above. One problem not mentioned and I've seen this multiple times is people don't care ifor a politician is a crook. I had several people tell me it's ok it they're corrupt as all politicians are. Couple that with the welfare state mentality so many have here and that's why.

TDcline and LSUtoOmaha have summed it up perfectly. Education, and especially Higher ed in Louisiana sucks. No one wants to move here...partly because the education is terrible. We simply do not value much of what should be valued in this state. The backwardness of our political elite is astounding. Did anyone listen to the Senatorial debate and not think they can do better??

Are these industries really a prize? DO these other states have to lure them with ridiculous unsustainable tax breaks like La. did with the movie industry?

I'm originally from NE LA.

Several years ago leaders from Monroe and NE LA brought in a group of Japanese executives to try and sell them on establishing a Toyota plant.

The executives were astonished by how trashy, dilapidated, and unkempt the place was. They thought if this is how people here treat and maintain where they live...is that a mentality we want to bring into our company? Order, cleanliness, neatness, respect are important hallmarks to the Japanese.

Aside from that, LA has horrible public education, a poorly educated populace, high poverty, low life expectancy, a lack of high skilled labor, and poor corrupt inefficient government.

LA is being outperformed by most other places in all key areas.

This. It's called Kennel Blindness.

"It's a term that refers to a breeder who, for many reasons, can no longer "see" their own dogs. Kennel blindness normally refers to someone who keeps breeding the same faults over and over because they really can't see the problems in their dogs. This blindness can become so powerful that a breeder might begin to think that their dogs' faults are actually strengths. It is hard to imagine that anyone could go so far astray, but believe me when I say it can happen to the best of us."

When David Duke garners enough support to make the debate stage, you know the answer to your question.

If we...

1) Lowered business taxes while eliminating deductions

2) Lowered the homestead exemption while eliminating the income tax

3) Centralized resources into LSU and a few other 4-year public Universities while minimizing others

4) Expand upon Jindal's K-12 reforms and addressed vo-tech education

5) Dealt with corruption

6) Build up our ports, airports and hurricane protection systems

7) Committ the bureaucracy to being as business-friendly in government as Singapore and Hong Kong and

8) Convinced Trump not to weaken free trade agreements

This state could take off like gangbusters. We sit on the Mississippi River and have 3 of the largest ports in the world. We could become an export juggernaut, if we had the will to do it. But in order to succeed, you have to convince people to give up some things, including a large homestead exemption and equally-funded 4-year schools everywhere, and that may not be possible.
