Officer records self planting drugs.

quote:

The video, from a January arrest, is from the body camera of Baltimore Police Officer Richard Pinheiro, who is seen planting a bag of pills in a tin can while two other officers look on. The footage was evidence in a case that was scheduled for last week, but prosecutors wound up droping the case after being contacted by a public defender who was reviewing the footage in preparation for court.

All 3 should be fired along with the prosecutor who clearly didn't look at the video before bringing charges.

I wish the body cams were perpetually on. But, my understanding is that the problem is memory limitations.

Has this been overcome?

What should be done when the cop is eating, has to take a leak, or has to make a quick call to his wife to discuss a doctor visit or family issue?

I don't see why they shouldn't get hit with drug possession charges also.

What kind of drugs were in the bag?

The issue is that police must activate the camera as an encounter begins. It's relatively easy to neglect to do this.

The reason they don't want the other footage is partially a data storage issue, but mainly they don't want a behind the scenes look at how policing is done. From meetings, the conversations with fellow employees, etc.

I think they should be required to keep it on from beginning to end of shift aside from lunch/bathroom break. This should be the requirement until there's a way to have the camera automatically come on during an encounter with the public.

Stupid question, but how are they recording exactly? From an SD card or is it like wireless cameras to a network operations center/server?

Maybe the "turn on" part can be automated in some way based on a variety of factors?

That might not get a perfect result, but it might improve it.

IE, "turns on the second a cop makes a call in", turns on if cop is moving rapidly, turns on if cop's heart rate elevates.

I dunno. Spitballin here.

They should have to log a code into their computer/smartphone for this. Should have an auto restart feature too, on top of obviously being logged.

Same reason cops dont get hit with inciting a felony charge for stings or porn charges for having cheese pizza.

They don't operate under the same rules as you and I

Said this in the OT thread on how to implement:

All cops ride with Laptops and wireless coms.

Develop a holster that has a laser that measures propagation. Something blocking the laser will have a x measurement compare to air. If an officer unholsters his weapon, this will automatically trigger video and audio via low power blue tooth.

All data is saved on SDHC and loaded into an SDM silo via online upload to secure site.

Wireless Carriers use SDM Silos for millions of subscriber profiles. While you wouldn't need a ton. This can easily be one full 42U 2 Shelf HP Gen 9 Blade rack.

The tech is there and the cost is minimal compared to civil lawsuits pending.

Yes. No longer an issue. The issue is police. They choose to maintain that facade of innocence.

The devices have ways of turning on / off based on the squad car's lights being turned on, leaving the squad car, and by remote (police hq). It can shut off the sound and not video.

The officer should never have the ability to turn off a device by himself.

As for space issues, they record on the device but the data can be moved to another device when they either return to the squad car or through Wi Fi...

Any cops weigh in yet? Personal privacy? All those hours NOT on a call? Talking to partner? Other cops? Wife or side piece on cell phone?

I wouldn't want every moment of my day recorded? Should me grunting on the shitter be public record?
