A lot of people on this board seem to hate identity politics. but how would you define identity politics( in other words is identity politics a zero sum game) and when do you think it started. and was there ever a time where identity politics was justified?

did it start from the beginning of this country?

or when Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation?

or When Democrats tried to who black voters by pushing for the Civil Rights bill?

or When Republicans pushed for the Southern Strategy (in order to woo southern white voters)?

or Is it more a recent phenomenon that came about in the recent election(BLM, SJW, etc)

It's always been around, but the modern era began n the mid '60s when the white racism of the Democrats transitioned into the black racism of the Democrats

It started in earnest in the 60s with Saul Alinsky's Rules for Radicals but in spirit it started after the third Aliyah around the end of WW I with the Bolsheviks, the migration to NYC and Palestine followed by the suffrage movement and women getting the right to vote ... that's where it all started.

The modern incarnation of outrage over things not worth being outraged about (white priveldge, microagressions, etc...) is tied to the philosophy of critical race theory.

what did the democrats do in the mid 60s that can be called black racism? Johnson did not look like a guy that would indulge in black racism or even entertain it. didn't he wiretap MLK Jr?

He got the "you know whats" (that term he so lovingly used so often because he CARED so so much) to vote for Democrats for 50 years and counting?

Don't know when they started but the left has perfected them. We have a full fledged progressive on our crew now. Listening to him is absolutely hilarious. He blames all of society's ills on white men. He doesn't see the monumental hypocrisy in his worldview.

Please see:

Adams v Jefferson
1792

They were the best of pals.
Even wrote an important document or two.

Then, politics split them apart.
And the country soon followed.

Probably when race-based slavery was introduced. Or when we started persecuting the "heathen" natives.

i would say that's correct mid to late 80's and bill clinton being the last traditionally elected democrat.

the thing is identity politics is a fools errand in a country that's 70% white. the danger was always going to be the creation of a white voting bloc and the distribution of minorities in the united states isn't uniform ironically minorities are most concentrated in red states. take mississippi for example 37% of the state is black that's the highest percentage in the nation yet 90% of the white vote goes to republican's. a state turns red when 60% of the white vote accrues to the republican candidate and then that trend moves up and down ballot. romney lost because he under performed his national average among white voters (60%) in the mid west performing in the low 50's where as obama performed in the mid 40's. hillary clinton under performed obama among whites in the mid west by 7 points receiving only 38% of the white vote trump on the other hand performed to his national average among white voters right at 59%.

the notion that you can put together a coalition of fruits and nuts and win elections is sophistry.

This is the correct answer in terms of what we think of as "identity politics" today.

Somewhere between this two. Possibly whenever the South became a one-party region, so at least by Andrew Jackson. The identity politics of white supremacy have been around for a long time in this country and with few breaks.

It has a lot of twists and turns throughout history, but specifically in the modern political realm of the US, this answer above and the link are correct. This is the version you are seeing today.

The left, along with their ilk in media and academia have perfected it. Only problem is, America is clearly tired of it, but they don't care.

It is hard to say when identity politics started. Possibly in the 1970's, bras burning, womens lib...

It has come full scale...

quote:

Liberal protestors jeered and mocked a Louisiana state chaplain when he opened a town hall meeting with prayer last week.

Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy scheduled the town hall meeting in Metairie, Louisiana to discuss issues like immigration, healthcare, and the economy, The Washington Free Beacon reported.

However, when Dr. Michael Sprague announced that he would open with a prayer, protesters from a local anti-Trump group called Indivisible, erupted in anger.

Some shouted "Pray on your own time!" while others yelled "Separation of church and state!"

Video of the event records one woman shouting the name "Lucifer" when the chaplain said God's name.

The yelling did quiet down as the prayer continued, but when Sprague said "We pray in Jesus' name," protestors shouted again for the separation of church and state.

They didn't stop there.

As a local veteran took the microphone to say the Pledge of Allegiance, the disruptive group booed him also.
