It's not about insulting people. It's about the embarrassing sensitivity a particular group of people now show and the faux outrage about anything and everything to where conservative people have finally had enough. Why cant everyone just have thick skin and leave shite alone?

And Liberals want to control every aspect of society.

And, I've been a Democrat for almost 40 years, and was in a blue collar union for 30 years before I took a management position.

You really think that was the point he was making?

Of course I do. Im not stupid. The point I was getting at was that it's irrelevant. I can understand a black person getting offended by someone metioning lynching, but just because someone said "blackface". Are you kidding me?

Then they came for saints, but I was not a saints fan. So I said nothing.

Then they came for the Texans and the Texans fought back

You reckon blacks get offended at old Looney Toons that pushed the stereotypes of sambos and pickaninnies through children's entertainment?

I understand there is an argument to be had that the name Redskins should stay and should go, but I think the black and white with which people approach this subject is untruthful and far too simple. The world is more shades of grey and complex than the simple nature so many here want to cast it in.

I'd keep the same logo and switch the name to The Natives

That's the thing...they didn't. White-guilt liberals did.

1. The original lawsuit to cancel the Redskins' trademark over twenty years ago was brought by seven Native Americans. The case brief (Pro-Football, Inc. v. Harjo), bears the name of plaintiff Suzan Harjo, who is full-blooded Native American and grew up on an allotment near Beggs, OK.

2. The Redskins have been protested against by members of the National Council of American Indians and the American Indian Movement, which are organizations with Native membership and leadership.

quote:

Redskin is not a racial slur, it's a term of endearment, and was meant as such at the time the name was coined as well as throughout the entire history of the word. "Redskin" is not the same as the n word, or any number of racial slurs that I could type here to get banned because it was never used as a put down. It was a source of cultural pride.

3. Aren't Native Americans the proper people to decide what is and is not insulting to them? Over 20 tribal organizations and governments have passed resolutions asking that the team name has been changed. You're also probably already familiar with the ads paid for and run by tribal organizations during the NBA finals. Heck, Andy Rooney discovered how offensive the term was to Native Americans back in 1992. LINK

4. Regardless of a term's origins, its the contemporary meaning that's most important. "Negro" was a respectful term sixty years ago, but today you can't use it without sounding patronizing. Regardless of whether or not Redskins began as an offensive term, it is clearly not a source of cultural pride today.

5. If Redskins isn't an offensive term, then why doesn't Daniel Snyder or anyone on his staff use it to refer to Native Americans?

If and when this happens, I think getting fans involved in choosing a new name might be a good first step.

Changing the name to insult Washington DC is stupid and childish.

I would never call the Redskins a dynasty, but they are by no means NFL nobodies. I hate to see their historical accolades reduced to a footnote of a new team.

For example

Personally I think this is one of the greatest Super Bowl rings, as well as most of the Redskins hardware is really classy by today's standards. I know that a name change doesn't erase this stuff, but it just doesn't feel right.

If any of that makes sense.

What offends me about this?

That the USPOT decides after decades of investment and work this trademark is no longer valid. Obviously they approved years ago. Now since some small group has a big mouth and politicians behind them they want to take away by government decree the protections they granted this organization??

It is just not right.

No one is making anyone buy their merchandise or go to their games.

Snyder should call a press conference and ask Harry Reid to attend since he has been so vocal and announce he is changing the name as he moves the team out of the federal city to San Antonio. Let Reid take the heat around DC for the city losing a NFL team.

I would relocate the team to another city and name it something like the Virginia Rebels.
