I really think it is mostly a "keep up with the Joneses" mentality which is basically ego.

The more you can withdraw yourself from that environment, the better you will be. I think having children makes that incredibly hard.

It seems to me that many place a high value on material things, much more so now than in previous generations. Many are consumed by their material goods and the chase to purchase the next "new, hip, or trendy" version of said item. In the process we have devalued relationships. As we continue to focus on material goods look at what has happened to our society as a whole, divorce rates rising, more misguided children.

everybody defines necessities in their own way.
Oh pahleez. You clearly don't understand what the word "necessity" means.

There may be things one needs to PRIORITIZE now over what they did in 1977, but necessity is largely unchanged.

It is very simple. You can enjoy more now or enjoy more later. Isn't complicated at all.

Some would like to enjoy life more when they are younger. Some want to enjoy it more when they are older.

There's actually some validity to this. It is one thing to save so that you're not broke when you're old but frankly, even at age 47, I'm going to enjoy a trip to the islands with my wife NOW a lot more than I would in 20 years. Sacrificing that trip now so I can enjoy it when I'm 67 is retarded.

the average IQ is less then 100 in this country, i mean what do you expect? dumb people make dumb decisions.

You nor I will ever understand it because we are not Dumb.

I hate to be mean and so blunt but it is the truth. And people who make a lot of money can be dumb with money. But in general, people who have low IQs make decisions that are stupid to those of us with higher IQs.

Let's at least be honest here. Most legit DUMB people are also too dumb to have much in the way of ability to live well beyond their means. They often have shitty credit which kind of kills that.

The bulk of those living well beyond their means are people who really do make plenty to do fine, but still manage to frick it up. These may not be geniuses, but on the whole, they aren't bottom dwellers either.

well i can't agree with that. Sorry but if you make min wage and you have a kid then you are living above your means. and somebody that makes min wage can easily find roommates and save money each month so they are not living pay check to pay check.

You responded to me but I can't tell what of mine you're not agreeing with. I didn't address any of this.

its amazingly funny, as I read through this thread, looking at the more 'liberal' posters, that their philosophies apply to this generation in the OP....

but somehow they don't apply to DC. it's sad really.

but not a peep from Dems as Congress has literally aborted and decimated social security, pure thievery to be honest, hasn't balanced a checkbook in what...20 yrs? and spent 17TT that we could never hope to pay back

There's no need to use the data service. I have a smart phone because it was the only free option. My data use is basically nill. Sometimes it goes up a little during football season.

Not a well thought out advert.

I hardly noticed the burger.

How did we get to a point where
people are willing to sacrifice real necessities just to pursue some fictitious standard of living that is perceived to be necessary?

This isn't really new. The difference is that there are corporations lining up to do this as opposed to the pawn shop or loan shark enabling this.

this is how my grandparents lived. Hand to mouth, despite both having good jobs. They blew everything they hand and then some. I know my grandfather was in deep with a couple merchants when he was chief of police!

Some of this, but payday lending capitalizes on this quite a bit. So its not the middle class that has exclusive claim on this. They just get the 0% apr offers sent to their door.

People havent changed, the means of exchanging goods has.

In 1900, there was no practical way for a poor person to regularly live above their means because they simply didnt have the assets to put down for such activities.

In 2014, we have ample means of paying for things we dont actually have money for.

It is very, very easy to live above your means today. That wasnt the case for most of history.
