That's what I was thinking
I know even if they turn the transponder off you can still see it on radar so if radar contact is spotty in that area they wouldn't know where it is anyway.
And if they it wasn't seen by the radars for even two minuets it would be hard to find it again with a transponder working.

The next few days could be interesting.

The OT is really buying into this oil rig email and theory, plus an apparent coverup or deliberate take down. I think some of the conspiracy theorist are taking over that thread.

pretty much the OT is taking any theory that looks some what plausible and running with it so that if it turns out to be true the OT can claim we are the ones who solved it

So what are all of the "Theories" thus far?
1) Catastrophic Failure
2) Terrorist Bombing
3) Terrorist Hijacking, have the plane somewhere
4) Shot down by govt
5) Cross Dimensional Vortex

6)Pilot or co pilot went nuts
7) catastophic clear air turbulence

aka lost, they are probably fighting some smoke monster right now

has this ever happened?

none of those clear air turbulence ever crashed a plane.
Posted on 3/12/14 at 8:31 am to catholictigerfan
The aircraft apparently had a catastrophic in flight structural failure due to severe turbulence because it was seen to emerge from the clouds with one of its wings broken away. All four crew members and 13 passengers were killed.

so does clear air turbulence include going through clouds?

aka lost,
What other explanation do you have?
And for whomever mentioned Clear Air Turbulance, wouldn't the jet have still been able to communicate/send out distress? Also, would that even be possible with a plane THAT large? I honestly don't know.
Posted on 3/12/14 at 8:37 am to catholictigerfan
quote:It can but I personally wouldn't consider it to be the case, not really sure what NTSB etc consider the parameters for CAT. Besides the chances of it being in play are pretty remote. The only way I can see CAT being a factor is if the aircraft already had a structural problem and or the aircrew severely over compensated for the CAT. In any event both seem extremely remote.

I would also think the CAT would not explain the transponder going off.

every day they go without finding it, the explanation is more and more likely.
