Independent agencies of the United States government

quote:

Independent agencies of the United States federal government are those agencies that exist outside of the federal executive departments (those headed by a Cabinet secretary) and the Executive Office of the President.[1]

In a more narrow sense, the term may also be used to describe agencies that, while constitutionally part of the executive branch, are independent of presidential control, usually because the president's power to dismiss the agency head or a member is limited.

Example:

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) works with state and local governments throughout the United States to control and abate pollution in the air and water and to deal with problems related to solid waste, pesticides, radiation, and toxic substances. The EPA sets and enforces standards for air and water quality, evaluates the impact of pesticides and chemical substances, and manages the "Superfund" program for cleaning toxic waste sites.

Not sure if this is the same thing, but Spicer addressed this today in the briefing.

he said there was no mandate, that they were just enforcing the social media type rules that were already in place.

Lol. That's bullshite.

I didn't hear you bitching when Obama HEAVILY politicized the EPA and issued gag orders on all agencies when he took office in 2008. Or when W issued a gag order. Or Clinton.

Oh I'm sure he has/had a specific plan. Pushing the globalists view of climate change/global warming as its mission probably isn't it though.

Fine by me. I'm more concerned with farmers, loggers, and builders destroying our natural resources

That is all well and good.

However, WHO appoints the head of the EPA? POTUS.

I have no issue with POTUS having oversight of the EPA and like agencies.

I have a problem with the POTUS using them as a political mouthpiece though.

Always have, and always will.

And any president who does that to the detriment of the nation will reap the whirlwind. That's how this works.
Folks are talking past each other here.

(1) Obviously the POTUS has oversight of the EPA. Aways has. Always will.

(2) Assuming ownership of "detriment of the nation" belongs to one individual or group vs another, we would clearly prefer the detrimental individual(s) to be subject to oversight by nondetrimental ones. The question is who is who?

The problem here is the apparent presumption that benefit, detriment and detrimental individuals are a settled issue.

No. Of course not.

Also, IMHO it's unreasonable for anybody to conclude that Trump or any other POTUS could "censor" the EPA.

And the EPA's "charter" does grant it a measure of "independence", so, it's premature and unreasonable at this point to conclude that any POTUS could "censor" the EPA.

Obama did politicize it towards the Left and Trump has a right and an obligation to shift it back to a "neutral" stance.

So the President should not have data reviewed that is processed by a dept before release?

Really?

So the DoD, Ed, State etc can release anything they want too?

The examples you've listed fall under United States federal executive departments.

The EPA amongst others does not.
