I had a friend who was from New Mexico, they said it was the worst place to live and survive and couldn't wait to leave...but I've never been to Mississippi.

Some of those states are because the Government owns so much land, and they are sparsely populated.

The southern states are due to demographics, lots of military bases, and lack of manufacturing.

The exodus of business from up North to the south will make this list look much different in 10 years as the South becomes more industrialized due to conservative policies.

After driving across New Mexico, I have to say it must be one of if not the most desolate places in the western hemisphere. Just mile after mile of barren nothingness.

I have no trouble believing what your friend said.

I love these articles cause even if you take them at face value all it does is show how stupid the people in the blue states are for continuing to support a federal government that keeps people in red states dependent on their tax dollars.

1) Return on Taxes Paid to the Federal Government - Gee, gosh, golly, maybe that's why most of the states are smaller in population? they paid less in Fed taxes?

2) Federal Funding as a Percentage of State Revenue - Gee, gosh, golly, maybe because red states chose not to crush their citizenry with taxes, maybe?

3) Number of Federal Employees Per Capita - WTF kinda metric is that? Numbers for small states are easily tilted for Coast Guard, border guards, deseg cases, voting rights monitoring, atomic energy, This is BS

Higher percentage of blacks, the Dems constituents.

California and N.Y. receives far more federal money than any of those states, just because they have more rich people that pay more taxes, thus lowers their percentage doesn't mean shyt.

As far as everyone in the red states, besides black people you can quit taxing everyone, then take the federal aid and shove it up your azz.

Most tax money shouldn't be going to the feds in the first place. It should stay in the states.

some (SD, Montana) are almost assuredly due to the federal government owning so much fricking land in those states

compared to nevada, alaska, utah, washington, wyoming, idaho, california, and colorado the federal govt owns relatively less land than in montana and almost none in south dakota.

try again.

Looking at this list almost all of these states have lots of federal land (national parks, military installations, government offices/agencies), in addition to all the poor people (whites, blacks and Indians).

bullshite.

Every white person I know with a child on Medicaid votes Republican. I seriously think they don't even understand that Medicaid is paid for by the government.

Not to mention the fact almost every Republican I know my age took federally subsidized student loans and attended a federally subsidized University.

I would say it has a lot to do with the power invested in each Senator and the fact that the smallest of states have two each. I bet if you looked up the Senators for each of these states you would find the ones who are the largest sellouts.

Majority of those states have high minority percentages too. As for South Dakota, Montana, and Maine, I don't know what their problem is. There is basically no one nor anything up there.
