Where would New York and Connecticut be if the government didn't give the banks sweetheart loan deals and cover all of Wall Street's bad bets?

And I'm sure they don't factor in the absurd subsidy of AMTRAK that runs between DC and NYC. It's nothing but a giant black hole.

Does this account for the military institutions in the state? I read a similar article before that took into account Red Stone arsenal, etc., and it scewed the amount of funding the state of Alabama receives from the Feds.

Let Louisiana get a fair share of our O&G royalties comparable to other states and we'd be self sufficient as frick..... We wouldn't need a god damn penny from the federal govt

I can tell you the business leaders and middle class in west-central Louisiana are going hard to the hoop to keep Fort Polk open regardless of whether there's a national security need for it. I daresay the vast majority of those folk vote GOP and are against government largesse-except when they benefit from it.

And that's what happens when you get people dependent upon the Federal Government.

And people wonder why Jindal won't take the "free" Medicaid money.

New Mexico has three Air Force Bases, White Sands Missile Range, an Army proving ground/maneuver range, Los Alamos National Labs, and Sandia National Labs.

All of that in a state with a population around 2 million.

The federal government is easily the largest employer in the state and it's not close, but I can't really say it's due to welfare or "handouts".

Typically, these "studies" don't exclude true general welfare items like defense and border security that benefit the entire nation, regardless of where the spending occurs. In fact, I think this article mentions that.

I once clicked to the source of one of these and did exclude defense. I got a slightly different Top 25:

Then I looked up census data and converted federal spending to a per capita stat. Probably a few years ago, but I wouldn't expect today's results to be too far different:

Now, what was the point of this thread again? Because it seems like it was a shallow-minded attempt to set (yet another) hypocrisy trap. Maybe that's just me, though...

You are a fool. That'd be $3b, $4b tops. That wouldn't come close to closing the gap.
