doesn't have a significant deterrent effect.
The only legitimate reason to end the death penalty is bc there is too much corruption in law enforcement and the judicial system and innocent people have spent years in prison and some innocent people have been executed. We have a system that is built on winning for the sake of advancing individuals and not a system built on cooperation to discover the truth.

its also OT which was made obsolete by the new covenant
what were jesus' thoughts on the subject? something about turning the other cheek IIRC

Can we quit calling the right pro life and call them pro fetus?

The death penalty is a bad idea, but not for those reasons.
It's a bad idea because courts can, and do, get crap wrong.
Over 2000 exonerations
Prosecutors and investigators have been known to fight for convictions above justice. The death penalty is a prison sentence that cannot be corrected.

It didn't seem to bother Robert G. Elliott, who fried six in one day (even though he was personally against capital punishment).

Perhaps what you mean is that the types and shadows of the OT were fulfilled in Jesus and therefore no longer of use to NT Christians. That's different than the OT being obsolete as the OT still teaches about God and what God has done in history. Also, the OT teaches about the moral law of God which doesn't change.

Sure, but in the spirit of compromise we need to get something in return.
I'll trade you pro fetus for pro tiny human chopper uppers putting tiny human hands up against sharpened steel blades meant to terminate lifers.
Deal?

you can have that if we can change pro and anti science to "pro science" and "stuck in the dark ages"

Solution....don't commit capital murder

I would love to see the stats, and I know they are probably out there, for wrongful convictions on capital crimes in the last 10-15 years. Especially in regards to first degree murder, I would have to assume it is less than 5%. I'm not convinced that "wrongful convictions" hold weight anymore.
It not being a deterrent is a bad argument too, as there is nothing that is a deterrent to crime. If there were deterrents, crime wouldn't happen, but people who are committing crime don't care about the possibility of jail otherwise they wouldn't commit crime. Capital crimes that qualify for the death penalty are about retribution, as there are very little chance at rehabilitation with the people who commit them. It might not be popular or moral, but I'm okay with it.

The death penalty is more expensive than life in prison.
I know that sounds crazy but its true.
Plus 4% of the executed are innocent. 4 out of 100 is pretty shitty if one of those is your family member.

That's disputable, what's not disputable is that it is the perfect punishment to fit the crime committed, and society will never have to fear that murderer committing another crime, in or out of prison.

I have a better argument against the death penalty.
Why do people think an imperfect trial system will only convict and execute guilty people?
Do they think the court system is perfect? Or are they ok with killing the occasional innocent person?

The Hebrew verb ???? (r-?-?, also transliterated retzach, ratzákh, ratsakh etc.) is the word in the original text that is translated as "murder" or "kill", but it has a wider range of meanings, generally describing destructive activity, including meanings "to break, to dash to pieces" as well as "to slay, kill, murder".
There is a difference between kill, and murder.

I agree. Completely different subject than executing murderers for heinous crimes committed though, isn't it?

What if a guy on Death Row ask for forgiveness and Jesus does, and then we execute the legit born again Christian.
Is that murder or just kill?

Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's.
That would be kill, as punishment for crimes committed. God forgives, not the state.
