Taxpayer to invest $691 million for GM plants in Mexico

...Detroit? North Carolina? Ohio?

quote:

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) -- General Motors outlined plans on Wednesday for investing $691 million to expand its Mexican operations, including the previously unannounced expansion of its Toluca engine plant.

The plans include a new factory in Silao in central Mexico to build 8-speed transmissions and an upgrade to an existing factory in San Luis Potosi that will make next-generation transmissions, GM Mexico President Ernesto Hernandez said in a statement.

Well ain't that special.

GM still owes the taxpayer(thats you and I) well over $20 billion. We have millions of people unemployed or under-employed right hena in the good ole U.S. of A. but GM choses to spend millions of our taxpayer money down south of the border.

Hope all these folks in states like Ohio & Michigan that voted for the little community organizer enjoy their part-time jobs at Wal Marks and McDonalds.

Hoax & chains baby...

Ever consider that this could be because it would be unprofitable to manufacture these in the US due to certain regulations so they are doing it in Mexico to help the bottom line and in turn allow for more cash flow to pay down their debt?

It doesn't always make sense to make things in the US.

No doubt GM will claim it can make a bigger profit in Mexico thus enabling them to pay off that 20 billion quicker.

then the bailout is proven to be an even bigger load of horse shite. the entire justification was b/c we needed GM to invest here and create American jobs. without that threat, the bailout was pointless

Which is with out a doubt true. If the projections for that plant being located there were not more profitable than any other location it would not be built there barring some regulation that forces GM to build it there.

Most companies could do that, then ship their product back to the U.S. But if they did, who could buy their product in the U.S. when they don't have jobs?

Most companies DO that if they operate globally. There's a million and one things that goes into a capital expenditure decision such as this one.

Talk to Westinghouse. I think they have basically moved most of their manufacturing jobs below the border - and people still buy their products.

So: GM hires workers, those workers unionize and drive up labor costs. Those UAW support terrible legislation and regulations which put their jobs at risk (all while demanding more pay for less work). GM instead of standing up to the UAW nearly goes bankrupt when super Obama steps in and bails them out at tax payer expense. Now we are supposed to sympathize with their building a new plant in Mexico, cause shucks guys, labor are expensive?

Right?

There's no sympathizing going on. It's not an emotional decision, it's a decision based on value creation for shareholders.

It seems like some of you may be dealing with a fundamental misunderstanding of how business decisions are made.

Which is fine if you did not sell out to the U.S. Government.

While I agree, hopefully more jobs in Mexico will attract some of our illegals back to Mexico.
