"In the end, what it really, really comes down to is the president has successfully hijacked this issue," Smith said on "First Take," explaining that the original purpose of the anthem protests - highlighting racial inequality and police brutality - has been lost. "He's turned it into an issue about patriotism and beyond. He's catering to his base in the process," Smith said. "He is the one that's winning because he's turned this into something that the players didn't intend to. So they're going to have to find a different mechanism to make their voices heard, because Trump has won this round."

He already won it.
Defending spoiled millionaires that protest the flag is not a good strategy.

Of course he is and its why he's trying to keep it alive.
The fact is that, no matter what the intent of the kneeling, they were never going to get past the optics of doing it during the national anthem. To your average american its just plain disrespectful, unnecessary, and honestly counterproductive.

Yeah he won it from the moment he said something
It's the easiest win ever just too many beta male cuck SOBs in 2017 to realize it

Yep. Smith gets it. As much as I hate it, this is a winning issue for Trump. People hate Trump, but they hate the NFL and political correctness even more.

People are still pushing the narrative that the players "didn't intend to disrespect the flag." This reasoning conflates the method with the message. The message might have been about police brutality, but the method of attention was decidedly acts of disrespect regarding the flag and anthem. You can't have your cake and eat it, too. You protested by disrespecting the country and flag.

He won because he took the side most people were on.

Also these dumbasses in the NFL should start realizing something: the election is in the middle of football season. If they keep up this shite, then Trump will be reelected for sure, this time carrying Minnesota, Colorado, and New Hampshire along with every state he previously won.

quote:go figure the double digit IQ illiterates of the NFL lost a battle of simple optics/ad marketing to Donald trump
He won because he took the side most people were on.
it's about saying "America is racist" but even if you take them at their word that means they're so stupid they can't figure out that the optics destroy any chance of getting their message across

This is why Trump is so awesome, he is not afraid to take a stand and battle groups that everyone else is afraid of
He promotes common sense and exposes the foolishness of the radical left and those that want to normalize that radicalism

They set out to shock people into understanding how racist America is by purposefully impugning a symbol of America. Now they’re shocked that they’re understood.

quote:Smith's choice of words is not correct and misleading (as often happens with these guys). "hijacked this issue" has sinister overtones. More correctly, he should have used "refocused this issue", returning it to where it belonged in the first place - before the MSM sprinkled their pixie dust on it.
"In the end, what it really, really comes down to is the president has successfully hijacked this issue," Smith said

it's that simple.
even though a grade schooler could've won this, I have no doubts that jeb would've cucked on this hardcore if asked about it

This. Your cause can be as noble and just as can be (for the record, the assertion that black people in the USA in 2017 are an oppressed demographic targeted for extermination by police is complete bunk, but i digress), but if you choose to make a time specifically designated to honor symbols of unity (RE: the flag/anthem) your time to spread a message of political divisiveness, you're going to have a rough go of it from a perception standpoint.
