oh no he called me a racist! Sorry I think it's stupid that I can travel to a major American city like Miami and hear something in Spanish first, then English second as if they're doing me a favor. But a racist!

Why did you post this thread if you didn't wish to hear differing opinions?
Not only are you racist, but you're a complete dumbass to boot. What a complete idiot you are.

I never said "NEVER SPEAK IT!" I said it's bullshite that the de facto official language of this country is regarded as secondary. That has nothing to do with racism. I never said I was better than anyone. People are so quick to want to use the fricking race card.

I have no idea what you are talking about here or who you're referring to.

Actually you haven't said that in this thread. I have no damn idea what you're talking about.

I never accused you of this.

I think that it's similar. The immigrants back then would move to communities like Little Italy where they could speak their native language and their kids would grow up speaking both, but mainly English. Many people now talk about how their grandparents or great grandparents never spoke much English.

It's the easiest thing to say without having to make an actual argument, and it is losing the meaning.

In case you didn't know, the same thing did happen in the late 19th century. It took until the third generation for most of those immigrants to truly assimilate...just like what's happening now. Assimilation takes time.

Pretty much. He makes no logical counter argument to my opinion. When you can't do that, just call someone a racist! This is what Apache has contributed to this thread:

"What a racist bastard you are."

See, Apache. This is what a good counterpoint looks like! This quote gives people something else to consider. And it's a very fair point.

I love the Mexican people that I work with. They mostly speak Spanish first and English second. Their English is better that my Spanish, but I'm trying to Improve. One of the reasons I want to learn Spanish is so I can get laid more often with pretty Mexican girls.

The guys who work for me do very nice tile, flooring, cabinet, and finishing work on high end homes throughout the San Diego area. They work their asses off and I love them.

I find the OP offensive and borderline retarded.

Calling people retarded is also considered offensive.

You're right. I shouldn't have said that and I apologize to the OP for that.

I encounter people in Houston fairly regularly for whom I have to use me very basic spanish skills on because they know even less english.

I dont lose sleep over it, but it isnt ideal.

I would at least try to learn a few words to get me around THEIR native land.

Was no attempt at assimilation in southwest Louisiana for the first 100 years of statehood. Wasn't until the 1930s when "the man" forced English on French speaking Americans. My dad said they'd get paddled in school if they were caught speaking French. And they couldn't understand a word the teacher said. My grandparents learned to read and write in French. I think it sucks that they forced English on us. Made us unique.

I never understood why conservatives are always so uptight about shite like this. If it's not the war on Christmas, or saggy jeans or wearing a flag pin it's Spanish. Chill out. If I lived around Latinos and their language is take it as a chance to learn the language.

Spanish speaking in the United States
Spinoff from a thread on Pelicans Talk

Are you annoyed by the increasingly Spanish presence of signage in America?
It's about dependency. Nothing more. Nothing less.

Far, far, far greater chance of dependence on government if individuals do not speak the native language, but government assistance speaks theirs..............and with dependence come votes.

Yes. The USA should be an English speaking nation. If people want to come here, they need to learn and use the English language.

Not really. You can't really learn a language from a textbook--you have to use it on a daily basis.

Most of the guest workers and immigrants I've encountered speak some English and are trying to learn, so I try to meet them halfway. My attempts at Spanish are even more comical than their attempts at English but we usually manage to communicate.
