They'll just have to get the frick over it.
Space is something that the United States will have to start planning ahead for before other countries catch us on this topic and start investing in this.

Not to mention if we kick start (moreso than already is) an arms race in space the amount of debris in orbit compounds. A bolt that came loose can destroy a satellite causing more debris that can destroy more satellites causing more debris...

I seem to recall from the '80s that they had this particle beam of protons or something that basically dissolved any matter it touched. But it only had a range of 3 feet because - it couldn't be controlled - it would dissolve any matter it touched.

Kessler syndrome
Space debris
Remember that it takes very little mass to create a lot of force when it's going 10+ km/s, so a tiny piece of debris can have catostrophic consequences for whatever it hits.
A space weapons race can create a lot of debris (space travel in genera does, but this would exacerbate it) which potentially can result in the effect above. China shooting the satellite several years back caused a big increase.
quote:
The Kessler syndrome (also called the Kessler effect,[1][2] collisional cascading or ablation cascade), proposed by the NASA scientist Donald J. Kessler in 1978, is a scenario in which the density of objects in low earth orbit (LEO) is high enough that collisions between objects could cause a cascade where each collision generates space debris that increases the likelihood of further collisions.[3] One implication is that the distribution of debris in orbit could render space activities and the use of satellites in specific orbital ranges infeasible for many generations.
Space debris
quote:
There are over 170 million pieces of debris smaller than 1 cm (0.39 in) as of July 2013. There are approximately 670,000 pieces from one to ten cm. The current count of large debris (defined as 10 cm across or larger[8]) is 29,000.[3] The technical measurement cutoff is c. 3 mm (0.12 in).[9] Over 98 percent of the 1,900 tons of debris in low Earth orbit (as of 2002) was accounted for by about 1,500 objects, each over 100 kg (220 lb).[10] Total mass is mostly constant despite addition of many smaller objects, since they reenter the atmosphere sooner. Using a 2008 figure of 8,500 known items, it is estimated at 5,500 t (12,100,000 lb)

2007 Chinese anti-satellite missile test
Anti-satellite missile tests, especially ones involving kinetic kill vehicles as in this case, contribute to the formation of orbital space debris which can remain in orbit for many years and could interfere with future space activity (Kessler Syndrome).[6] This event was the largest recorded creation of space debris in history with more than 2,000 pieces of trackable size (golf ball size and larger) officially cataloged in the immediate aftermath, and an estimated 150,000 debris particles.[24][25] As of October 2016, a total of 3,438 pieces of debris had been detected, with 571 decayed and 2,867 still in orbit nine years after the incident.[26]
They represent more than half of the tracked debris orbit the Earth with a mean altitude above 850 kilometres (530 mi), so they would likely remain in orbit for decades or centuries.[27] Based on 2009 and 2013 calculations of solar flux, the NASA Orbital Debris Program Office estimated that around 30% of the larger-than-10 centimetres (3.9 in) debris would still be in orbit in 2035.[28]
In April 2011, debris from the Chinese test passed close by the International Space Station.[29]

My plan would have two large branches. The Navy(and Marines) and the "Strategic" force, which would handle space, cyber, nuclear.
Marines are the appendix of the armed forces.

So long as they don't have to lift heavy things.

Typical Marine, that chip on the shoulder is soooo evident.
Now let's get back to letting the Army handle our Nation's defense and FOLLOW ME!
My plan actually follows the constitution and if you would put some thought into it it would actually be much less expensive, keep us out of foreign entanglements that we don't belong in, and give the American people much more "buy in" on their military.

Damn, should have written my Congressman to insist upon naval rank instead of Army Air Corps derived Air Force rank. Admiral of the American Space Fleet sounds so much better than General of a Space fighter squadron!

I am an outspoken conservative on this board, but I think the "Space Core" is BULLSHIEEEET.
Wasteful Spending ..We bitch about the left's handouts all the fricking time..This is no different except it is going to military handouts.
Also wanted to add that the GOP's stance on Net Neutrality and willingness so sell us out soo quickly makes me fricking sick.
