Given that every item has a UPC code (except for produce but those have four-digit codes which help the scanners), the law should be changed to disallow these purchases by making certain UPC codes ineligible:

The study found that SNAP shoppers bought slightly more junk food than non-SNAP shoppers. For example, 9.25 percent of total purchases by SNAP shoppers were for “sweetened beverages” such as cola, which compared to 7.1 percent for non-SNAP shoppers. At the same time, SNAP shoppers spent relatively less on nutritious foods such as fruits and vegetables.

quote:

For SNAP shoppers, “sweetened beverages,” “prepared desserts,” “salty snacks,” “candy,” and “sugar” accounted for 22.6 percent of purchases. These junk food items thus accounted for $15 billion of SNAP purchases in 2016, if the study is representative of all SNAP purchases.

You'll hear a lot of apologists argue "that's because healthy food is more expensive!"

It's not. Really, it's not.

Reforming SNAP purchasing restrictions seems like a very politically popular thing to include in a party platform.

Nobody should be ok with this type of junk food spending off the backs of taxpayers.

Not only are they costing us money now, they'll be costing us money in the future with diabetes, obesity, heart issues, etc.

I would love to here a liberal on here explain to me why it would be wrong to restrict what SNAP people can and cannot purchase.

One of the few things I dislike more than government collecting money (taxes) and handing out money (welfare) is government telling people what they should eat and drink.

The main arguments are:

1) healthy food is more expensive. It's not. I hate that bullshite argument. What they really mean is that Whole Foods is more expensive, which is a silly straw man.

2) it's robbing people of their dignity to tell them what food they can and cannot buy. I say "tough shite" when you are using other people's money.

If you want a perfect example of everything that is wrong with the federal government look no further than the food stamp program. 15 years ago the snap budget was $18 billion and there were restrictions on what you could purchase with them. Today the snap budget is $71 billion and you can basically buy whatever the hell you want with them. Big government run amok.

Since the gov is collecting and redistributing the funds then I have 0 problem with the gov telling recipients what they can and can't purchase with those funds.

I'm actually on the opposite view here. If you're going to live off the government dime you give up your freedom to choose to eat junk food. Odds of you being able to pay for the health problems you develop are pretty slim if you can't afford food.

People who work and can afford to buy their own food are free to eat whatever they want.

When you choose to get your food funds from taxpayers, you forego your purchasing rights.

Sad thing is all the big grocery chains and food companies and farming lobbyists will block any sort of law limiting what people on snap can buy. They love that they can buy whatever they want because they make more money.

Crony capitalism at its finest. This would be a great issue for small government Rs and far left libs to get together on.

I didn't say that shouldn't be the case.
My point was simply that when government sticks its bureaucratic nose where it shouldn't (e.g., monetary handouts), the erosion of freedom in many other areas becomes a slippery slope..
The whole system is gross.

You think Coke, Frito Lay, General Mills, etc. are going to let anything get reformed? Yeah right.

Something to think about, 20% of our health care expenditures are spent on the treatment of diabetes.

The type II diabetes epidemic has exploded in the last 25 years, not only in America, but world wide.

80-85% of type II diabetes can be traced back to the crappy garbage that people are eating/drinking.
Processed foods, foods loaded with sugar and corn syrup, people sitting on their couch eating two bags of Cheetos and eating a gallon of ice cream in one night. Gallons of sugar/corn syrup drinks are consumed weekly by one individual.

The list can go on and on.

Our goobermint is not helping by allowing SNAP users to buy crap food.

I am willing to bet that many SNAP users are diabetic and have many major heart ailments that could be avoided by eating good nutritious food.
