Slack chief executive Stewart Butterfield has thrown his weight behind the basic income movement, joining such illustrious company as Bill Gates, Tesla boss Elon Musk, and Y Combinator president Sam Altman.

“Doesn't have to be much, but giving people even a very small safety net would unlock a huge amount of entrepreneurialism,” Mr Butterfield tweeted recently.

He went on to suggest that the billions spent on university education around the world each year would be put to better use if given directly to individuals as a an unconditional payment.

If choosing between free healthcare, free university tuition and a basic income, the Canadian wrote that, “college seems the least important by a factor of 10”.

He added: “Plenty of people are happy and successful without any college, whereas all dead people are just dead”.

slack is a good product. Maybe he ought to make his software free for everyone since he agrees we need UBI. Tired of paying corporate prices.

"admits"?

Did he previously deny the notion?

Does his opinion have any more weight than mine, or anyone else's?

Jimbeaux admits that universal income is a terrible idea.

It's just a claim. A lie can not be established as a "lie" until actual enactment of the process...and the passage of time and analysis of data... can be evaluated, before a counter claim can be made. Only then can something be proven to be either true or false.
But remember......it's not a lie if you believe it.

Because there is some validity to the idea. And some of the most notable conservative economists (Friedman) and libertarians (Hayek).

The key, as unlikely as it may be, is to get rid of the entire welfare state.

If you have enough foresight you'll see that eventually a universal basic income is going to be necessary at some point in time.

Are we there yet? No.

It'll be when robots and automation do the majority of the labor in the country.

The real question is how far are we from it?

Eta: I think these super rich techies like to talk about it because they know once it happens, they'll be even more filthy rich and powerful because they will be the ones behind the automation technology.

That claim is based on what real life application data?
What was the study group?
