Seriously though, why does the whole "get angry, discuss gay sex" thing happen here so much?

you'd actually know the number isnt 20%. FAIL #1.

Sorry numbnuts, but the ICR is actually negotiated between the NSF and the receiving institution, and is different for each institution. The negotiated rate depends on a university (or whatever)'s actual overhead expenses - so a university in down town Manhattan will have a higher overhead than one in bumfrick Mississippi (durp a cow walked across the field)

Finally we agree on something.

its the same in the private industry. most people don't grasp how quickly things like payroll and overhead will eat through a business's cash.

Do you not want to fund biological research at all? Because the folks at the NSF thought it was worthwhile. NSF and other federal science grants are not easy to come by, a majority are rejected (at least it seems that way in our group :)

So you do Biology now?

No. The guys at the NSF awarding the grant do, though.

EDIT - One thing I think maybe you're not considering is this money not only produces science - it produces scientists.

i actually agree with you. god help me.

It's not, though.

It's like,"GOD I HATE OBAMA. You fricking liberals. UGH.

YOU ALL JUST LIKE TO GET POUNDED IN THE BUTT HOLE BY LARGE PENISES. ARGH."

Like, why do you guys (not you in particular) start thinking about graphic gay sex when you're mad or passionate about something?

It's weird as shite. Like, genuinely bizarre.

It's be like if liberals got mad about gun control and just started shouting,"I BET YOU LIKE TO EAT PUSSY, DON'T YOU? GOD DAMMIT YOU MAKE ME SICK."

It's just random as frick.

Nah. If you start now, you'll be through the fat by the time I finish lunch....should be about even then

To be serious though, to complain about scientific research that supports one of the largest economic drivers of the gulf coast is ridiculous.

No mention in a couple of pages, but it's you, with this post, that is resurrecting and perpetuating it.

It's all well and good that this guy made this for less than $50, but what happened to the rest of the money DEDICATED to this study? How do you justify that? All you proved was that the government gave him way more money than needed, and he confirmed that.
It's amazing how ideological blinders make some people incapable of the most basic critical reading. Read the exact thing you quoted:
quote:

Researchers at the Grice Marine Laboratory at the College of Charleston, South Carolina have received at least 12 NSF grants totaling over $3 million over the last decade for their work, including a $559,681 award “Impaired Metabolism and Performance in Crustaceans Exposed to Bacteria.”
The $3m figure is an entire decade's worth of grants for an entire marine laboratory. Even the $559k figure is for an entire area of research. Neither of the figures refers to a single study.

Its all in how it was phrased "Shrimp on a treadmill" does sound ridiculous. Problem is no one bothers to look further, they just have an emotional reaction and that's it. Even folks who don't really get biology and read the abstract on the grant and see there's a lot more going on than shrimp on a treadmill.

I can imagine back in the day an experiment like "smashing tiny particles into a thin sheet of gold" could have been made to sound utterly useless, as well!

But it's not just that one example in this thread. I'm going to start bookmarking it every time it happens.

Ive been thinking about this a lot recently. I believe that scientists are failing in the new pop culture world to present their ideas effectively and have been trying to brainstorm a secondary outlet beyond journals to get the information out.

TED talks were a good start, but there needs to be something more ubiquitous and more in the grain of the current technology in society.

I bet you could get a $300,000 grant for that worthwhile venture. Good luck!

I agree somewhat, but I think a great deal of this is also the fault of shoddy journalism - and this case is a prime example of it. Its also a problem with shoddy politicians who think they know everything (on both sides).

Really though, almost any experiment can be made to sound ridiculous.

Thats my point. The scientists, as usual, will have to take control of their own message and make sure it is disseminated properly.

you do realize that there are other funding sources than the government, right?

The majority of scientific research in the U.S. is privately funded. I forget the actual number its like 60/40. And many scientists jump from public to private and vice versa.

The reason most government funded scientists choose government work in spit of lower pay is you have more freedom to direct your own research, and that actually matters more than the money.

I'm friends with an asst prof biologist at an R1 institution who has had a five-year grant for $500,000 for...around four years now. I don't think you are very well-acquainted with the world of grants in academic science.
