I won't lose sleep over this. You don't have to be an animal activist to feel empathy for the shitty conditions circus animals live in. Especially the elephants.
I guess you aren't aware than animal rights groups paid $25.0m to settle lawsuits arising from RB's libel suits over the false claims of animal abuse.

I don't need to read an article to know that no elephant wants to be driven around the country in a trailer
One of the units travels by train and the cars that carried the elephants were not close to being "trailers."

This saddens me. My family used to hit up the circus every year

You and I don't know a thing about elephants, so we'll start at that.
I also will say that there is a big difference between what the law allows you to do treating an animal and what we probably should be doing.
So the question is, while the law allows you to transport elephants by train, do tricks etc, is the elephant truly not distressed by that?
Then you get to how it was trained in the first place, in which case you hope it wasn't through the phajaan or similar practices.
I think it should be looked at a lot more academically than most discussions are carried out.

"At least they aren't dead!" Is such a brutally terrible argument

Ringling Brothers Circus will shut down

What pisses me off are the "PETA wins" articles on the web.
Posted on 1/15/17 at 11:59 am to Ramblin Wreck
This is a victory for the weak liberals, who basically forced an American institution to shout down bue to weak peta pressures and and animal rights wacko's. Don't think that they will just move on to something else the average American loves and start putting pressure on them until the close. I wonder how stupid peta will feel when the circus animals are euthanized.

it's a real problem in the wild, and RB B&B is not in the business of letting valuable animals suffer. they are getting the best of care and living conditions

No kidding. That doesn't negate the effort to improve conditions outside of the wild. In fact, it has no bearing on the issue at all.

I'm not saying they are, but I'd also say there seems to be a healthy debate as what constitutes adequate care of elephants.

Again, debatable. I would think some elephant experts argue that anything less than a mostly free roaming sanctuary or similar situation necessarily denies one from claiming the "best" care.
That's not to say the circus is evil if they end up being wrong on this issue. We're all evolving in our knowledge and practices.

How similar are they to the units they travel by in the wild?

NOPE! The circus employees will be given jobs in the death camps. Remember, all of us Trump supporters are Nazis.
We are building camps for you liberals starting next Friday at noon. That is why the circus is staying open until May. Give us time to get the camps up and running so no one misses a paycheck.

frick those assholes that ruined the circus & forced them to shut down
THIS is a prime example of why so many of us on the right continue to say that idiot liberals hate America...

I have been to the circus many times over my 54 years.
I won't be sad to see it go. in the last 15+ years it has become a song and dance from start to finish of telling you how great it is to be at the circus.
It has become unbearable.

If you've read the articles and seen the news the main reason they are shutting down is low ticket sales. Sounds like the market at work so you conservatives shouldn't be mad.
and the main reason for this year's low ticket sales?
the fact that the elephants are gone
