I knew a guy who trained the military how to kill and defend themselves with a knife.
He basically told me that the person with a gun inside 20 feet is at a disadvantage to a person who is highly trained in martial arts with a knife. It's quickly over...
So, the lesson here is that the police do not take chances with your state of mind.
A thief sticking around for police is a threat all by itself .

There was a cop in Ouachita parish that went after a guy with a taser. The guy had a gun hid and shot and killed the officer
Since the gun was hidden, I don't understand your point. Surely, the cop wouldn't have wasted his time with the Taser if the gun was visible.

If cops are so well-trained, I don't understand why it would be so difficult to, say, shoot this guy in the kneecap or something. He has a knife. You have guns. Or maybe even taze him?
At any rate, they saved the state a boat load of money.

You never use non lethal force without deadly force over watch, period. If it is ineffective you end up dead or seriously injured. You shoot to stop a threat. Best place to put rounds to stop a threat is 1 the head and 2 center mass.

1 to the head
2 to the chest
rinse and repeat.

You do not train to incapacitate when using deadly force. This is not the movies. You have no idea how effective your fire will be. And what if the round you fire strikes an innocent civilian?

A guy looking to pick a fight with cops vs. trigger happy cops isnt a good combination.

Someone has been watching too much TV.
Only in the movies can a guy shot someone in the leg from 30 yards out while the suspect is running, and the shoter is falling down...
A pistol is accurate within only a few yards.
Now couple that with the fact that an officer is an intense confrontation and only has one, maybe two seconds to react. Think of 'buck fever' but your life is on the line, make the wrong choice, you end up in the morgue or severaly wounded.
The suspect is moving and most likely threatening the officer, the suspect is not stationary with a huge bulls eye painted on his leg.

Shot him In the knee. Lol.
Yeah because a knife can't kill you

Justifiable shooting
Kid was looking for a fight with cops and got it. Sadly his life ended up being worth 2 sodas. So silly

Because police and military are TRAINED to not aim for, say, kneecaps.
You are trained to aim for center mass... greatest likelihood of striking your target and stopping the threat.
When using small arms there are no warning shots and you aren't aiming to wound. There's a reason that it's called deadly force.

Pretty much.

they could have tased him or shot him in the leg.
I don't think cops can do this. If your gun is drawn, it's shoot to kill.

Exactly.
Handguns don't work in real life like they do for Jack Bauer or Rick Grimes. People that have never shot don't know that.
Around 50 yards is the max accuracy of a regular hand gun. It only goes down from there depending on the stress of the situation and the skill of the shooter.
Interweb idiots think that cops should be able to shoot the knife out of someone's hand at 200 yards with a Glock.

If this is true, and I suspect it is because it makes sense, then we have a public education problem. People should know this as well as they know stop, drop, and roll, in my opinion.
But they don't, and they don't care about analyzing the issue the way the law does (i.e., with an eye toward the best justice possible), so we have riots instead of patience.
