A lobbyist working on behalf of Russian interests attended two dinners hosted by then-Senator Jeff Sessions during the peak of the presidential campaign in summer 2016, the lobbyist Richard Burt told The Guardian. His claims appear to contradict Sessions’ recent sworn testimony, in which Sessions said he “[didn’t] believe” he had been in contact with any Russian representative “including any American lobbyist or agent of any Russian company” during Trump’s presidential campaign.

Let me be clear, I'm 99% sure there's nothing nefarious here.

But...

This is just poor preparation and staff work. This sloppiness just doesn't do the AG any favors.

Just like how he couldn't cite the exact DOJ rule that prevented him from discussing his conversations with POTUS.

So we're going to believe a Russian lobyist's word over the sworn testimony of the Attorney General?

So, he's an American lobbyist with "ties" to Russia? No wonder Sessions didn't recall.

Ding.

This is the equivalent of my meeting with Sessions with Russian dressing on my tie.

How many people were at these dinners, 2, 50, 300? Who else did the lobbyist, Richard Burt, lobby for, was it only Russia?

I don't think Sessions has denied this specific dinner happened.

I'm thinking he'll say it was just an oversight.

Burt said he was invited to two dinners hosted by Sessions last summer. Former Republican foreign policy officials were also reportedly in attendance.

So let me get this straight:

An American lobbyist working for a PE firm "connected" to Russia... somehow, and who previously worked for a company that was, at some point, acquired by a Russian entity, attending dinners with Sessions and multiple others is somehow Sessions coordinating with the Russian government?

This is where the constant broad term of "Russians" begins to become a problem for the Dems. No doubt every single person in DC can be put through the Six Degrees of Vladimir Putin.

But even assuming the worst, Sessions saying that he, by quote, "didn't believe", is not an outright denial, and he would walk right by any perjury charge.

Shoddiness? We're supposed to believe a lawyer and an accomplished man of that esteem didn't/doesn't remember his interactions?

Y'all give smart people a lot of leeway. If he "misremembered" details and facts from his meetings, it was intentional and deliberate

Attending a dinner doesn't equal being in contact with.

I must have missed the part when Sessions was asked if he had met with any Americans who may or may not have worked for companies associated with the Russian government.

This is [s] getting [/s] ridiculous.

Are you aware of how many people attend these dinners? Not to mention the fact that a lot of the invites don't necessarily come from the hosts themselves?

So we're going to believe a Russian lobyist's gossip to a tabloid - maybe, because The Guardian just makes shite up at times over the sworn testimony of the Attorney General of the United States?

These are legitimate questions. The answers to these will determine if this is a nothing burger or not.

From the article:

quote:

Asked whether Sessions was unfamiliar with Burt’s role as a lobbyist for Russian interests or had any reason to be confused about the issue, Burt told the Guardian that he did not know.

quote:

It is also possible that Sessions was not fully aware of Burt’s lobbying history
