Dammit, don't you know by now not to question our maker. He gave us marijuana, he gave us the coca plant for cocaine, he gave us the poppy plant for heroin & opioids.
There's really only one answer for this. God liked to party!!!

This answer is way to over-simplified.

huh?

In your mind a young and dumb catholic would ignore the Catholic teachings and engage in pre-marital sex...yet would be unwilling to ignore the teachings on birth control?

Likely do agree with his sentiments, but sentiments do not make good law.

He is saying that things that are bad for us should be illegal. The church and politicians are very similar in that they wish to legislate things that they believe are wrong.

What?

It's a religious belief system. That's kind of how it works.

Pope Francis is an authoritarian who has no respect for individual liberties, social nor fiscal.

Instead of doing his job and persuading people to follow Christian values and morals he constantly advocates government force in order to impose his personal will on others.

So they're removing wine from the sacrament, right?

Oh, and is he going to crusade against coffee too? Advil? Nyquil?

Zero tolerance is idiotic.

Could you provide an example of Pope Francis actually forcing anyone to do anything?

Not a fan of freedom apparently.

Oh well.

I condemn jailing people for their stupid recreational decisions.

Attempts, however limited, to legalize so-called “recreational drugs”, are not only highly questionable from a legislative standpoint, but they fail to produce the desired effects.

I never said he forced people to do anything, but he constantly uses his power and influence to promote big government in every way. He is openly anti-capitalist this is not a big secret.

Really, a religious leader saying drugs are bad.

No shite, I bet next week he's going to come out against abortion, too! I disagree on his stance on legalization as well as his claims that legalization would not help the problem. I agree with his stance that people should say no to drugs, but I believe that they should have the option to make that decision for themselves. I will always say no, but that doesn't mean I care if others do.

Hey look a straw man argument.

First, if you read the entire quote, he specifically mentions alcohol abuse as well.

Second, any good Catholic will tell you that no one drinks wine at church. And for the non believers, the wine ingested is nothing more than a sip.

A sip of any alcohol beverage is far from any type of alcohol abuse.

This is all he says in regards to alcohol:

quote:

If we say “yes” to all these things, there will be no room for illicit drugs, for alcohol abuse, for other forms of addiction.

He is not calling for the prohibition of alcohol - a drug - only warning against its abuse. Why, then, can that same position not be taken for other drugs? It seems like his position is either incomplete or hypocritical.

Furthermore, why rely on the State to advance these initiatives given the poor results of drug prohibition?

There are certain things I like about Pope Francis but his consistent commingling of Church position with State enforcement is not one of them.
