Politico: Trump’s team and lawmakers making significant strides on tax reform plan

President Donald Trump’s top aides and congressional leaders have made significant strides in shaping a tax overhaul, moving far beyond the six-paragraph framework pushed out in July that stoked fears about their ability to deliver on one of the GOP’s top priorities.
There is broad consensus, according to five sources familiar with the behind-the-scenes talks, on some of the best ways to pay for cutting both the individual and corporate tax rates.
The options include capping the mortgage interest deduction for homeowners; scrapping people's ability to deduct state and local taxes; and eliminating businesses' ability to deduct interest, while also phasing in so-called full expensing for small businesses that allows them to immediately deduct investments like new equipment or facilities.
quote:
So far, the tax reform process has been led by Cohn, Mnuchin, McConnell, House Speaker Paul Ryan, Senate Finance Chair Orrin Hatch, and Ways & Means Committee Chair Kevin Brady — a group that has nicknamed itself the “Big 6” and is eager to project a united front on policy and political questions.
Republicans want the fall to be all about taxes, if they can help it. It seems like their best and perhaps only route toward a major legislative victory before the fever of the 2018 midterm elections takes hold.
“People are feeling optimistic because they do not see failure as an option. They’ve put all of their eggs in one basket now, and that basket is tax reform,” said one source familiar with the administration’s tax talks. “The fear of failure on this will cause people to agree with things they may not normally agree to.”
The White House is even creating a mini-war room inside its existing communications shop to pay special attention to taxes, led by newly installed communications director Hope Hicks, according to a White House official. She will be joined by Tony Sayegh, assistant secretary for public affairs at Treasury, who will be temporarily detailed to the White House to help Hicks and others build public support for the tax overhaul. Another White House official said that the president will make a major tax announcement imminently.
quote:
Decisions still being hammered out are whether a hypothetical tax bill adds to the deficit over a 10-year period — a key factor in passing legislation through the budget process known as reconciliation, which requires fewer party-line votes than normal legislation.
Top White House officials are less concerned about adding to the deficit because many believe that the economic growth stemming from lower tax rates will make up any budget shortfalls.
Get this done

If the cucks and GOPe limp dick f**ktards in Congress do not step up to the plate this time, it will be time to purge them out of the party.

More of this. Would love to see Trump and the GOP stay focused and get this done. Leave the left to debate genitals and statues while you use your majority to focus on strengthening the economy which is easily the most important issue - always has been and always will be.

Lol good luck with all of this. Their failure to pass ACA replacement will make a budget-neutral bill all but impossible.
I guess they need to go through the motions to keep the base settled.

Trump needs to write the bill bc those lazy fricks in Congress have an aversion to work

nice to see that the administration finally sees value in pretending to take some dimension of policymaking a little bit seriously

WTF do you mean? Grandstanding and not keeping your promises is a lot of work. (sarcasm alert)

Good news if true, but honestly, at this stage...
I'm going to wait to see if anything actually comes of this.

Unfortunately, any tax cuts are dead on arrival because it will have to be revenue neutral. I don't see how they are going to do that without getting into a political swamp.
I honestly wish Congress would just come out and cut spending across the board by 20% and then enact the tax plan they desire. Without touching SS, Medicare, and defense, there just isn't enough left in the budget to cut that moves the needle in a meaningful way.

You gotta point so I'll rephrase......those lazy fricks in Congress have an aversion to work that affects 'Merica' in a positive way.

You'd think these would have to be phased out over time or home values would adjust accordingly overnight, and not in the positive direction.

They already pay the most Federal Income Tax dollars.
What else you want from them?
Top 2/5ths account for 87% of the total Federal Income Tax.

This should have been done by the Easter recess. Better late than never though.

you realize that they raised taxes in 2017 on everybody making over 117k by raising the social security max out $8700.00 in one year alone. it's supposed to adjust for inflation it went up over 7% in one year. did we have 7% inflation last year? no. that was obama's phuck you out the door. did my maximum benefit go up one iota? no. i just pay more for it.
they need to raise taxes on the middle class since they don't pay income tax anymore.
hard to cut what people don't pay.

Define your middle class. Anyone making over 66k is still paying.
