I dropped my land line 5 years ago. Politicians don't know my cell number. And they can't knock on the door because I've got an iron fence and closed gate with spikes on the top.
No trick or treaters on Halloween... no Mormons.

The apartment that the Mormons stay in when they are on a Mission in Fayetteville happens to be just down the street from me. Since I'm getting to old to outrun them now I've taken to happily greeting them and announcing that I worship the Elder Gods. That usually serves to drive them away though I did have a good conversation with one of them who wanted to know if it was Hastur the Unspeakable or Great Cthulhu. Bonus, it works for other religious groups as well.
I've also told all my friends and business contacts the land line is off till after the election. I was getting three or four calls a day from politicians and that is three or four calls a day too much.

Did they ask you about purchasing a one month supply of food?

I tell them I'm a convicted felon and not eligible to vote. I'm waiting on one to have MoveOn or Acorn call me back and tell me how to get around that.

Get a decent VoIP phone service (not Cox or U-Verse) and laugh at the people who can't get through. I use Callcentric.com and they offer an ingenious telemarketer block feature that stops them cold in their tracks. If a caller is not in your phone book, they're prompted to enter a number (it changes on every call) to be connected. Robo-dialers can't do that. Problem solved. I haven't had a spam call in ages but I see at least a dozen failed attempts every day in the phone log.

Who still uses land lines?

Well, the next question is... how do the politicians do polling if very few people use land lines?

I can tell you from a retired professional activist that 40% of landlines have been cut off and cell phones are slowly taking over. Another 5 years there will be few landlines. I keep mine only because our closest relatives in their 80's and 90's use them and have no cell phone at all. I know for a fact that the political parties have started gathering "advertising" cell phone lists to use for calls in 2016. They are buying those lists. Your privacy with cell phones will soon go away. I also know that the Dem's are trying to get a rule to require a cell phone phonebook. The unions are asking for that.

Why do you need to keep your land line because some of your relatives have a land line?

I change to Ooma because I don't always get great cell reception and kept a land line.
Good thing about Ooma with the $9 a month plan you can block callers. I bet I have 50 different numbers of political organizations blocked.

My Dad (age 83) has fun with the automatic pollster calls. He gives them different ages, ethnicity and political affiliation each time they call.

1.People who prefer the superior voice quality of a wired connection.
2. People with home alarm systems that require a land line.
3. People who like the security of having their address registered with 911.

It is actually cheaper for us to keep our landline than to have it cut off. We just keep the phones unplugged.

Thank you. Now I don't feel guilty about still having mine.

After hurricane katrina, weren't cell phones pretty much useless for a few days in BR?

I have an elderly relative and I have asked her at least 20 times to stop calling my land line ( because we want to get rid of it ) and start using my cell phone number.
She still calls the land line no matter what.
