It was "anyone but Trump."

The best was when "principled Conservatives" started supporting Gary Johnson without doing any research but slowly learned over time what a looney loser he was.

None of it makes sense-- I was just playing up the villain stuff for dramatic effect since my insightful and incisive posts clearly have a prominent and long-lasting (see OP) effect on many people's lives on here. Also relieved KILLary lost and glad the cabinet seems to be mostly conservative, this I can tell you.

Trump was the only Republican who could win Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin and thusly the election.

Silly OP, and a very stale topic.

First off, Nate Silver aside, I don't recall "only Rubio can win" being a serious contention on anyone's part here. Rubio was absolutely the surest thing though.

Secondly, notwithstanding the fact you and others fail to recognize it, Trump was a huge huge risk. His odds of pulling off what he did were far less than would have been the case for several other GOP candidates. That is why he was actively selected by TeamClinton as their preferred opponent.

Ultimately Clinton was so flawed, she even lost to Trump. But it still took a combination of Wikileaks along with an FBI October surprise to hoist him over-the-top. Assertions that Rubio, or Pence, or Kasich, or Cruz, or Romney or others would not have beaten Clinton are just bizarre.

Look, Trump won. He won against all odds. He could potentially be great in office. Why even go to the "He was the ONLY guy who could have beaten Clinton?" He wasn't. So why go there?

There is a reason I keep emphasizing fallacy in the "only Trump could win" argument. It may well be the case, amongst a group including names such as Biden, Webb, Sanders, Warren, Cuomo, etc., only Clinton could have lost.

if you understand that, yet still insist "only Trump could win," it does not bode well for future POTUS elections.

What other candidate would've done as well in the Rust Belt? Do you think Rubio's softness on illegal immigration and penchant for supporting trade deals would've been more successful than Trump's message?

The salient question is what other candidate would have needed to?
But to your point, even vs Obama and with his GOTV collapse, Romney'12 out totaled Clinton'16 in Ohio.

yeah - no reason to beat people over the head with this stick

I was for Rubio early on because he looked like the strongest candidate with the best chance to win

I thought for a long time that Trump was toast during the campaign - so happy I was wrong

I will say this; my position FROM THE START was that I would support the Republican nominee (much like Reince Priebus) - so why mess with Lou?

What electoral map would you have projected to where he didn't need the rust belt?

Actually many GOPe supporters were saying almost anyone other than Trump could have beaten Clinton easily.
