NYC Fast Food Workers "Strike"

SIAP

quote:

The workers in New York City are demanding the ability to form unions and to be paid at least $15 an hour. Currently, the median wage for food service or food preparation worker is $8.90 an hour in New York City, according to the New York State Department of Labor, the lowest of any occupation.

The Article

I put strike in quotations because its not actually a strike since they're not unionized, but that was one of their demands.

But in all seriousness - fast food isn't supposed to be a job for 40-somethings to raise a family on. It's for teenagers and stoners to buy playstation games and pot. If you hate your job - you have the ability to find another in the wonderful capitalistic system that has been provided for you. But if you decide to keep going from fast food job to fast food job all of your life and don't get on the ball of actually learning a viable skill or trade besides dropping fries in grease, then tough shite guy. You made your own life decisions, now deal with it.

This does bring up an interesting intersection of the left's hate of fast food and love of unions.

Well, if you double their pay then can they do 2x the work, because the industry cannot afford those rates. Who is gonna go to McDonalds and pay $10 for an extra valve meal?

I hope to God they do unionize and strike. Then they will be out of business, and new york will continue to kill their revenue stream.

This will leave the south with a booming economy due to the majority of our industries being open shop or right to work states.

Pretty much that way here, I believe. I think the only McDonalds in town pays about $12/hr, and the food is expensive. Their national ads always have a Hawaii and Ak disclaimer on pricing.

I fully support their right to unionize and strike. I also fully support the fast food chains in firing them for doing so. If the wages truly are too low, then no one will "scab" their jobs and wages will go up. If wages weren't too low, people will be happy to replace them.

The market is a beautiful thing.

How about this? You can join the union if you work at McDonald's for a full year, working full time. How many member would they have? Twenty?

It's a job that by definition has a remarkable turnover. This isn't a career kind of place.

yea, and would you rather be a painter/laborer/low end carpenter for $15/hr or work in a fast food chain for that...

they want the pay but not the work associated with it....

I for one would welcome paying $12 for a Big Mac Meal if it meant the people preparing my Big Mac are getting paid $12 an hour.

15 dollars an hour? That's ridiculous. You can look at it this way...if fast food were to get that much more expensive would that help America's obesity problem?

Lack of a greasy fatty dollar menu might cut down on some of the fatties. I'm not for the unionizing fwiw, but just trying to shed a positive note on it.

If you are asserting that you would actually pay $12 for a quickly made hamburger using cheap ingredients, I'm going to call you a liar.

I hope they unionize and win. They a quarter pounder will cost a customer $10. New York deserves this to happen.
