Why not just have him go through the scanner? It's not a sensory overload anymore than the patdown and madness the mom caused for sure

Good question. Answer not in the article.

He did pass through the detector of course, but not the body-scanner.

If I only had to fly every once in awhile I would just go through the scanner as I already have to undergo routine CT scans. If I had to fly like I use to I would opt out every time to not add to the radiation I already receive.

She must have opted out I'd assume. The routine is that they must go through the body-scanner. If they decide to opt out they get the pat-down procedure you see here. I don't know how this played out as it isn't mentioned in the article.

CT scans aren't comparable to the body scanners. CT scans are on the scale of 10,000 to 100,000 times more radiation than the body scanners at the airport. I don't like the body scanners, but thats not a serious issue with them, even if you fly every single day

Is it wrong that I don't see the problem?

The headline leads to to believe he was mentally handicap, but in the article, the mother says they requested to not go through the scanner because of sensory issues (whatever those are). So since they bypasssd the scanner, they had to go through a standard, professionally done pat down.

Maybe I'm missing something, but looked like SOP to me.

And I'm betting that the delay (which tsa said was about 45 mins) was largely in part to the mom's hemhawing

Really? You want someone molesting your child? A child with an impairment? Subjected to having his private parts touched by a dirty old man?! How do we know who is touching our children in that way? We preach and teach no one is to touch you but now give permission to TSA because of what? They have a badge! He passed through detectors just fine. They inspected the laptop, all was well! That dirty old man had a nice vision for the shower that night!

Mentally handicapped were often targeted for suicide missions. Not that I agree with the TSA but being mentally handicapped shouldn't be an out.

Read about it and I hate the TSA as much as the next guy and didn't have a problem with this... he got treated like anyone else and it sounds like the delay of 45m was due to his mother flipping out.

The TSA is nothing but security theater. They took an actual effective model (Ben Gurion in Israel) and took out all the parts that make it effective.

Bureaucrats gonna bureaucrat.

TSA is a joke of an agency and a terror to passengers.
I was flying out of Reagan this evening on my way to Seattle. The TSA pre line was backed up, but the idiot TSA agent continued to check people and send to the end of a line to wait. When I came up to the line I told her she needed to stop checking people because the wait line was so long that she couldn't see who she had checked or not. Nobody was inside the check point. They were all outside the check point. She said if I didn't want to be checked I could step aside and let her check others.

I said, no, you get a supervisor here right now. She was not happy about this, but a supervisor came over and asked me what the problem was. About a dozen people all at once backed me up and said she was not following security rules.

He dismissed her, stopped the TSA Pre line, and checked to make sure we all were inside past the checkpoint before checking anyone else.

There are some real idiots at TSA. I ran into one this evening. (writing from my flight).

The TSA is 100% security theater.

Other than it being a complete waste of time that caused people to miss their flight for the sole purpose of security theater.

I don't think this is especially bad, to be honest. The mom blew this out of proportion. Just bc someone is special needs doesn't mean they get a free pass when their laptop tests positive for esplosives.
