No post on TSA pat-down of special-needs child? If you can stomach it.

Freedom from Sea to Shining Sea...
If you can watch the video feel free. I did not make it as it is the illest of ills.
I realize the subject has been beaten to death, but we must not forget that sometimes the 'bad guys'/terrorists, they do win.

Didn't they have this kid for over an hour? Crazy.

Doesn't really have anything to do with politics

TSA is a joke of an agency and a terror to passengers.
Posted on 3/28/17 at 10:43 am to reo45
I actually watched the video.
I know the TSA gets a lot of legitimate criticism; however, the agent that performed the search was professional, thoroughly explained everything he was doing, and the kid was very calm through the whole thing.

I haven't watched and don't really care, but if they're wasting time patting down the mentally handicapped or special needs children, then I can't think of anything any dumber unless the parent looks suspicious
and by suspicious I mean Asian

He didn't seem visibly handicapped in the video and was communicating with the agent. All I'm saying is that, within the TSA framework, this really didn't seem all that bad.
And the kid's laptop apparently tripped an alarm or something, which led to the patdown.
I think the mom is the one with the issues.

yea, i think our TSA policies are a bit much, but if the video is reflective of what happened and the execution of the policies.... well... im guessing that a lot of the delay and horror of the incident was on the mom too.
there definitely needs to be strong training and policy in place for special circumstances but if flying with special needs children its probably also good to prep for the idea that they might be subject to a basic pat down. chat with them before and let them know that its nothing bad if it happens etc...
escalating it to 45 minutes, needing extra police, etc... unless something got way off track seems not to be the best way for a family to handle screening.
i dont like the policies, but there isnt much choice other than grin and bear it if flying and push to have it changed on a policy front.

But at least they weren't profiling because that makes muh izms hurt!

I also think its stupid
However, the minute terrorists notice retarded kids don't get patted down. Guess who the next recruits will be?
And that goes for any class of people, women, old people, infants, handicapped, etc

I wouldn't be surprised if that was a result of the mom being difficult.

I think I found the problem.
Except that the TSA was chasing a phantom laptop and copping a feel of a handicapped kid.
Why not just strip search him so they could get their flight rather than making the parent buy a new ticket because TSA is incompetent?

that was definitely what i meant. If the agents really went off the rails, then maybe she was justified in escalating it but if they were handling it in the standard manner and all... id have to guess most of the
"trauma" of this incident and why it became so impactful to the child was likely her own escalation of what would have been a 2 minute pat down.
*disclaimer- this still coming from a guy that dislikes TSA and doesnt know what happened pre-pat down, but gets that flying is what it is and making a scene at the airport isnt going to get you out of it.

Agreed...from the thread title I figured the kid was getting molested!

The TSA is a bloated, unnecessary waste of time and money.

Anyone who thinks that is 'normal' or 'procedure' and find it OK is no friend of mine.
My dad has never touched me like that and you would call him a pedo if he did. No one will EVER touch me like that for my safety. This is meant to desensitize the civilian populace so that eventually it will be 'normal' and not intrusive whatsoever.
That flag that is posted behind on the glass is very symbolic to the video itself.
America, where box-cutters have given us (government) abilities we never could have imagined. Oh, and underwear bombers too.
Terrorism, the gift that keeps giving. Endless terror at opportune times to give us (government) more power and control.
The devil may not be real, but government sure is.

All because of right-wing Christian terrorism.

i dont think anyone here is considering it normal.
but the truth is that if you want to fly in this country you either need to be prepared to deal with the procedures in place, or advocate and wait for change.

I use to fly. There was a period from 2005-2007 where I flew very often between Colorado, Dallas, and Louisiana numerous times.
This was before the body-scanners and intrusive pat-downs.
I was always subjected to the 'random' pat-down. This wasn't the intrusive pat-down that you see done here, but it was a pat-down nonetheless. Every time I flew. It became so 'random' that I would just take my shoes off and walk up to the TSA agent and say I'm here for my pat-down while in Denver International.
Once the underwear bomber happened and the very next day we start hearing about these great body-scanners and how they will start intrusive pat-downs 'for our safety', I stopped flying. I couldn't handle the radiation I would receive and would never allow myself to be subjugated to pat-downs that had them rub the backside of their hands over my genitalia and pat my arse. I wouldn't lose my humanity.
So, I drive. I'll drive to Phoenix this June; Drive to Jacksonville at the end of April.
