Edmonson is being investigated by the FBI for illegal campaign contributions to JBE. That's good but that illegal endorsement through the LTSA needs to be looked into as well.

In Alabama state employees pay 7.5% of their income to the retirement system. This money is taxed by the state.

No. In Louisiana the money is taken out of our pre-tax earnings and we pay no state tax on it when we receive it. I some situations a person may not have to pay federal taxes either but I think that's for people not getting much in the first place.

Good for him He worked close to 40 years in a job that the vast majority of people would and could never do. He was in the public eye and scrutinized. There has to be an incentive for people to do certain jobs. For him, the chance to work hard and be able to take care of his family was it.

There are thousands of officers who do that and don't get this type of incentive. He spent the last 9 years in his cushy office with his executive position, and now he gets paid for the rest of his life based on that. He earned a hefty salary as top dog, he doesn't deserve to keep getting paid that salary after retiring though

Water is wet. Just whisper "film tax credits" three times in a row and he'll appear behind you!

A little. It's not like he got a 32% raise during one of the worst fiscal years in the history of the state. Oh wait...

You got to admit it arises from trying to get the votes of retirees somewhere along the line and has little to do with their pay.

bullshite, although changing it would guarantee the loss of votes for the politicians supporting it.

What person ever took a job with the state because they would not have to pay a few hundred dollars in state income tax 30 years latter???

People routinely list pension benefits as a reason for choosing a career in La. State Govt.

I really doubt most government retirees would mind if the pension was state taxed particularly if the money was used to lower taxes for everybody.

You are 100% wrong.

How cold hearted would be it for a pensioner to demand tax free treatment of his income while everyone else paid tax on their retirements?

What they should demand is that the State follow the rules in effect when they agreed to devote their life to a career in state government. If you want to change the rules, grandfather them out, but other incentives will have to be found. Most state pay is basically nothing (not Edmondson's salary).

NOTE: I am not a La. State employee.

They do if they pay even half-assed attention. Troopers can retire at 100% after 30 years. Once they retire they have to take a break from law enforcement for 6 months but then they can take a non-LSP job and get both checks.

You'll be hard pressed to find a State Trooper retiree starving anywhere.

Sure. But it is 100% bull if you think employees are looking at the after tax benefit of their retirement benefits.

"Hey Mary, we would like to hire you as a Supervisor in the Depart of Widget Inspection! The pay is $50k, with health benefits, civil service protection and a defined benefit retirement plan!"

"Is the retirement income taxable?"

"Well it follows the same exemption as people on Social Security."

"Screw that! Take your taxable post-employment benefits and shove it!"

No, tax laws are not a contract. The government can raise rates or eliminate a deduction anytime they feel like it. That said, a phase out might make sense.

The entirety of the package is considered by anyone with a brain.

This is correct. We are one of the 10 states who are looking out for their state employees and trying to help them deal with a federal issue. No denying that.

So state employees should be penalized because LASERS runs well?

Wait wait... IB is off his rocker per usual....but LASERS is a joke. It's not run well... it's just running up the bill for future generations.

See the unfunded liability - 9th worse in the country (but I guess at least it's not the worst?)

I was talking to my State Rep about LASERS. I recommended that the State of LA grandfather in a change to something along the lines of FERS ( the new Fed Retirements system). It has saved fedgov a tremendous amount of money and seems like a workable model for them to emulate.

I have seen no movement on the issue yet.

Nah, as taxpayers from the private sector we're getting damn tired of footing the fricking bill for these government employees (city, state and federal) lavish retirements and benefits.

The only FAIR solution is to have the government subsidize private retirement and benefits to match the government employees sweetheart deal, so how much do we need to raise taxes on all working people to make this happen?

I can assure you that many older LSP retirees draw about $1000 a month and no social securiy. They sure are balling aren't they! The state has only done two cost of living increases in the last 22 years that I know of. Do not judge them by Col. Edmundson's pension. Call the LSP retirement system. It is public record.

What taxpayer gets protected from tax increases simply because he didn't get taxed before??

It's ridiculous to imply a tax free pension is an employment contract.

I will certainly complain as I see taxes unfairly applied while JBE seeks to raise my taxes.

Who here wants a tax increase while film makers are being paid $180 million a year and government retirees are being exempt from some $200 million in taxes?

There it is. Finally. You want other people to pay more taxes so you can pay less. Yep. Solid tax strategy. You are so principled.

Dwr353, just curious. You said your spouse was ineligible for survivor benefits.

Is your spouse a state retiree as well?
