Mike Edmondson to get $128K retirement--state tax free--age 58

There is nothing at all right about state and federal employees getting state tax free treatment of their pensions above the amount they would have received from SS. LINK
Edmondson--only 58--gets his pension for life. The rationale for the tax free treatment of the political servant's pension is that they do not pay into social security and social security is state tax free. Well about the most you can get from SS is $36000 and you have to wait to age 67 to get that much. This man is going to get paid over $1 million tax free before he reaches the age of 67.
It is unfair and JBE and his cronies in the legislature do not care.
State retirees and federal retirees in Louisiana should pay income taxes just like the rest of us.
(Edmondson, BTW, had a deal hatched with Jindal to dramatically raise his pension but that fell through.)

Good for him
He worked close to 40 years in a job that the vast majority of people would and could never do. He was in the public eye and scrutinized.
There has to be an incentive for people to do certain jobs. For him, the chance to work hard and be able to take care of his family was it.

Nonetheless his pension should not be state tax free if the common worker has to pay tax.
Damn the government class and their special privledge.

Meh. You love you some taxes.

And when they just increase compensation to offset the burden?

He got one over on the public and tried to get more!

IB, give it a rest. Go put your investment money in state/municipal bonds. You won't pay federal income tax, either.

How about this situation. I retired from the state and then went into private business. After year 4, my taxable income was in excess of the max social security rate. Since I was self-employed I paid the full tax. In the next 16 years I paid about 16000 a year.
When I retired, my social security payment was cut about 400 a month due to my state pension. My wife is ineligible to get survivor benefits. So much for special status. Are you as outraged about this?

I would be perfectly fine with taking the money raised from taxing federal and state pension income---in excess of $4.4 billion per year on just state pensions--and lowering the overall income tax rate.
Why should a government pensioner get something a private retiree does not????
All you government workers think you are special and suffer from being under paid--a lie--and deserve special treatment.

I can't understand what you wrote but yes I am outraged that any state pension income you have over the amount you would have gotten from social security is tax free while mine will be taxed.

You're jealous aren't you.

Do you put your life on the line to protect others in your career?

Why should a CEO get something a normal worker doesn't? Maybe it is because there are incentives to do certain jobs?
A lot of state workers (particularly competent more senior level folks), could make much more in the private sector? This is an incentive to keep our state from collecting the dregs of society (well more than it does anyway).

Does the clerk at the landfill? She gets the same tax free treatment.
Does the mailman? the school teacher? the janitor? the tax collector?
Stupid statement on your part.
I am not complaining about his retirement--although it is very lucrative compared to the average citizen--I am complaining that his income is state tax free.

What I am saying is that I paid over $200,000 in ss taxes and my benefit is cut because I have a state pension and my wife can get no survivor benefits(check out WEP and pension offset). I can assure you that 2% state income tax savings is not 400 a month.

Does the state treat a CEO differently than a "normal worker" for tax purposes??

I doubt it.
There is nothing at all right about giving government workers state income tax free treatment of their pensions and any of them that whine about it are not good citizens.

None of which has anything to do with whether or not the state should or should not give preferential treatment to pensions paid to government workers as they do.

nice try. I'm not a government worker. In fact for the vast majority of my practice I spent my time in courtrooms fighting AGAINST the IRS. You see...I actually made a career out of trying to get people to hold onto their own money. You constantly advocate for people to pay more to the government.
The exemption from taxes for gov workers is part of the negotiation. They could pay them more and require taxes be paid. Would that make you happy? Seems terribly inefficient.
Tell us, small gov guy...who else should pay more taxes?

Let it go Aswell. You were successful in running him out of office. Just let him be now.
