The election obviously went poorly for the Conservatives, however it's not quite the earthquake people are making it out to be.
The immediate effect will be almost nill, the next UK government will look and function largely unchanged from the last.
The main thing that happened was May ruining her reputation and political career.

Interesting new narrative. Last week, we knew with certainty that the terror acts would only continue momentum in the direction of Brexit. We also knew that polls were irrelevant.

Fascinating spin.
By any measure this was a truck wreck for May. Having to go to a minority party in attempt to form a government has hamstrung her on any brexit negotiations. She should have resigned and let someone else have a go at it.

Can anyone call a new election? Or is just the party in power?

They have to have an election every so often (5 years), but party in power can call an early election. Tories had big polling lead and gambled that they'd pick up seats. Didn't work out that way.

The Labour party got 50 less seats than the Conservatives and a lower % of the vote and yet somehow they "won" the election?
Losing is the new winning for the left I guess.

She needs to step down. If only Nigel Farage could be PM.

The previous Conservative PM David Cameron and Theresa May both campaigned against Brexit.

But they still want Brexit, they have made that clear in their statements.
The more interesting aspect is their bright red line opposition to gay marriage. They say they will never compromise on it. That is in direct conflict with the Conservative party, much more so than Brexit.

quote:Yes but Theresa May wanted a hard Brexit. That's why "the immediate effect will be nil" is retarded. Negotiations start next week and now the EU knows that the Tories are depending on support from a party for whom a physical border is a red line.
But they still want Brexit, they have made that clear in their statements.
