McCain: Attacking the press is how dictators get started

President Donald Trump’s attacks on the press echo the language of dictators, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” warning the nation to heed lessons of history.
Attacks on the press, McCain said, are “how dictators get started.”
“I hate the press. I hate you especially," McCain told NBC's Chuck Todd, according to excerpts of the interview set to air Sunday. "But the fact is we need you. We need a free press. We must have it. It's vital. If you want to preserve – I'm very serious now – if you want to preserve democracy as we know it, you have to have a free and many times adversarial press. And without it, I am afraid that we would lose so much of our individual liberties over time. That's how dictators get started.”
McCain’s comments came in response to a question about Trump’s recent declaration, made via Twitter, that the press is the “enemy of the American People.”
“They get started by suppressing free press,” McCain said of dictators. “In other words, a consolidation of power when you look at history, the first thing that dictators do is shut down the press. And I'm not saying that President Trump is trying to be a dictator. I'm just saying we need to learn the lessons of history.”

The problem with his argument is that we don't have a free press in America. We have an advocacy press. We have a partisan press. The press chose sides a long time ago. 90+% of them are in the bag for the Democrats.

He's such a piece of crap lately. I get he qualified his comments but he didn't need to comment at all.

Truth
A free objective press is needed in America, but there is very little of that left.

I've had it with McCain. Where was he when Obama was bashing FoxNews the last 8 years?

Our institutions are stronger and more resilient than any in history. Certainly stronger than any in which some tinpot dictator has arisen.

Wikileaks exposed how the press is nothing more than the political propaganda arm of the democrat party. They deserve all the criticism they get, they are not immune to it. They delegitimized themselves through their lock step collusion with their democrat party partnership.

Oh yeah John-great qualification.
Would someone please call the home to come get him? He is obviously lost. There must be a Silver Alert out for him.

An adversarial press is a great thing. If only that could be repeated for Democrats as well.
The Intercept, even with its left-wing bias, is the only American paper I've seen that treats both Democrats and Republicans the same.

If it weren't for the press who would talk to John McCain?

This. He's too old to realize he's just being used at this point.
Go home, John. It's OK to retire. Your best days are behind you. Way, way behind you. Before 2008 behind you.

And a press that was proven to have interfered in an election on the behalf of a candidate.

There is NO free press. It is owned, and has become the mouthpiece of a singular political party, and this is not new. Its been going on for a very long time now. McCain is a kiss arse BS artist, and a very dishonest person who simply will not call a spade a spade, when he knows damn well it's a spade.
I think McCain thinks that if he plays nice and kisses everyone's arse enough they will accept him, and he's probably right, because the further he moves to the left the more they will accept him.

McCain is staring down the twilight of his woefully uneventful and unimpactful tenure as a politician. He's desperate to do or say anything "shocking" that will garner him any attention as he fades into mediocrity. The media know this so they book him, and he's compliant into selling out in his final hours to get some airtime. Maybe he thinks he can be relevant just one last time.
Not to mention he's grossly misconstruing the topic at hand. He's right about freedom of the press. Whats so disingenuous about his statement is that he's inferring that the administration is placing in the editing room and production booths a soldier with a gun. This isnt even in the same breath of 'state controlled media' - the press is just as free now as they ever were.
But for the first time, this administration is not hesitant one bit to call the press out on their bullshite. Confronting the press head on is in no way taking away the freedom of that press.
This vauge attack by McCain is how stupid shite goes viral and more fuel to the echo-chambers is added
