So instead of talking about the problems in the public schools...

I thought the public schools were run by the school board and the mayor/president doesn't really have any say over how they are run.

Is that not true? (serious question, please correct my ignorance if I'm wrong)

I'm rooting for St. George, even if only looking as on as a civics experiment. Hopefully the guys running the show are getting everything lined up.

They aren't. Their budget is a joke. They are essentially claiming that they can run St. George more efficiently than any city in Louisiana. A hell of a claim considering they haven't done it before.

LSURussian has already posted a comparison of the proposed St. George budget and other cites in Louisiana.

Well, not to mention, they are going to isolate their biggest tax base with this type of hostility. If they want to keep the St. George area as a part of BR, they need to try to appease all sides, not try to paint them as some sort of evil dragon.

Let's just say this whole thing falls flat. Do you think the St.George residents will forget about Kip's hostility?

Yeah, it's not possible to do anything if you haven't done it before. Like going to the moon or sailing around the globe.

They are trying, but it's going to be an uphill battle from here on out. They think a ton of money is getting ready to be spent by those that oppose SG. It's going to get very interesting and probably very messy.

Not to mention if the mall of la and perkins rowe gets annexed to BR. I'm already hearing people say that they will never spend another dollar in either of those two places.

Thankfully, going to the moon isn't what's at stake.

yes it is far fetched

The only way I see that it works is if their residents do not demand the same level of government services they currently have.

Most of the folks out here who supported Kip are against the Incorp of SG - I would wager 90% of those who support SG didn't vote for Kip anyway. I've been in 70817 zip since 1990 and most of my neighbors that I know and talk to are against the SG movement.

The city should have been annexing these areas all along as they were developed. It's what cities do and how they grow.

Where are people going to shop? At Cortana?

City/Parish consolidate government makes that less clear cut.

I'm curious why the outlying areas of SG weren't already incorporated to SG.

I'm pretty sure the reason is because they'd have to spend more money to provide services to the SG residents. If that's the case, then that kind of makes the point for incorporation, does it not?

I'm sure they gave some sort of tax incentives or whatnot, but both of those locations have been around for 10+yrs, I am sure they have more than paid for those incentives by now

Absolutely. And the city has definitely received nice return on investment.

well... that's certainly some interesting timing for that to come out

seriously, in his speech he could have at least acknowledged their concerns as legitimate before saying "sorry we're poor" or something. what he said was probably even more counterproductive

I have been turned into a supporter of SG because of the people against, primarily. I voted for Kip for his second term, but he lost my vote this last go round because of that damn bond issue he kept trying to pass through.

This. It's like a bunch of freaking kids around there. I had thought Mayor Holden was a good man (even if I don't agree with him all the time) but this really makes me question things. It would be so easy for him to validate their concerns and solve some of them for quick wins. It would make him a hero and setup his campaign for Lt. Gov. But instead, he antagonizes them, galvanizes their resolve, and makes it more likely they incorporate. Idiocy.
