I think the coming hegemonic order will be, by definition, not hegemonic.

And that would be a realist answer I'd like to hear. If he starts on a tangent about the supremacy of American ideals and values, however, we'd know where his motives lie.

FWIW this is just one author's opinion of Mattis. We really don't know exactly what his true beliefs about intervention or "continued engagement" are. Up until now he's simply, maybe "simply" is the wrong word here, been a general tasked with carrying out the foriegn policy of the US government. And I think it's important to note that the SECDEF's job is to administrate the DOD and set military posture in accordance with the President's foreign policy objectives.

I think it really depends on how Trump wants to use his top cabinet members. He could appoint a non-interventionist as SECSTATE. If he intends to use his secretary of state as his main foriegn policy advisor and just uses Mattis to build and administrate a military that he wants to see then Mattis's foreign policy worldview may very well be irrelevant.

Here is my broad guidance to the SecDef.

Focus the Army on fighting and winning our Nation's wars.
Focus the Air Force on supporting the Army.
Focus the Navy on maintaining freedom of navigation around the world.
Focus the Marines on contingency operations/protection of US citizens and interests abroad.

No more nationbuilding.

I finally pulled my head out of my arse and figured out historically what the mission of the Marines is. They are our threat. Our club. Army needs to ratchet back contingency operations. And yes, that means the airborne as well.

I know a Marine (desert storm veteran) who served under "Made Dog Mattis". My friend was ecstatic (to say the least) when he found out Mattis was chosen as Trump's Secretary of Defense. Maybe now we can get around to the business of vaporizing these ISIS cockroaches.

I've said many times on this board that the army should be solely a national guard function.

The Navy should be the preminent military service.

It should have a structure and function similar to what we had just prior to World War 2. It should have a small active component and a large reserve component. It should require tremendous effort to mobilize. But when it is mobilized...
