Most “open marriages” I know eventually failed, mainly because people get too attached to their side piece.

The ones where hubby gets caught balling an underage chick are also common.

It has that in common with same sex 'marriages', which coincidentally also trend open.

Divorce and pre-/extra-marital sex. Imagine, as a thought experiment, how many problems would be solved if sex only within a marriage and commitment to marriages were, once again, a standard or goal promoted throughout society. STDs go away, children all born to nuclear families, increased wealth, etc.

Open marriage is like communism. It works awesome in theory.

The ones I am thinking of were troubled before getting opened. It was their way of spicing things up while staying together.

Didn’t quite work out that way.

Is it cheating if they know about it?

If an open marriage actually works, wouldn't that be a better solution at keeping the marriage together than getting a divorce and splitting the family?

No. Why would little Johnny at 6 years old trying to understand why he has two different men plowing his mom be better than a single nuclear family?

IMO, the true level of commitment and love required to fuel a happy marriage is simply not conducive to open marriage. Once one, or both, begin to have extramarital affairs, the insecurity and destabilization begins. No matter how "open-minded" these people are, they are human.

My wife and I have been together for 24 years, married for nearly 22. I know that we have both been faithful to each other, and that makes a big difference. If I found out tomorrow that she had sex with another man, it would effectively be over. I would expect her reaction to be the same if I had sex with another woman. We are not selfish, we are loyal to each other and our vows, because we are still in love after all this time.

I am not only committed to my wife and children, I am committed to the idea of having a healthy, loving family and a healthy marriage. My grandparents had these kinds of marriages. I didn't learn it from my parents' generation.

plenty of game.

but i love my newlywed wife more than anything on this green Earth. As a man it is my responsibility to love, protect, and respect her.

That respect means being faithful to her and only her.

maybe one day you'll understand that type of love. if not, i feel sorry for you.

I'm not willing to share my wife with anyone. If you are OK with your spouse fricking other people you need mental help.

people have long forgot that marriage means sacrifice.
our society has become selfish and self serving. when those people get married and aren't willing to sacrifice anything and everything for the one they pledged their love to. it's never going to work long term.

The love, honor and respect part of wedding vows was put in there for a reason. If someone is banging others with or without the consent of their spouse, they aren't honoring or respecting them. I don't know how they could really be loving them either although everybody's definition is different I suppose.

yeah, I have yet to see an open marriage work for the long term. they either close it up, or break up. Sometimes they will keep the marriage open but it isn't really open.

The open marriage thing was the rage about 10 years ago with people we knew. Most of them blew up.
