That is true but all she has to do is say "no more common core" and she's good.
But many states already refused to adopt it. The standards can exist as guidelines without any incentive to implement them beyond that. It's not technically a federal initiative anyways.

Either way, I'm sure there a lot of people who can do that, and still look like they have any idea how the department functions.

The President's 'biggest mistake?!?!' He is giving a lifeline to a dept. that should not exist. You're going to have a tough 8 years if you think this is his 'biggest mistake.'

She's still going to be confirmed one way or the other. Highly likely democrats just see a good opportunity to get at least one scalp in the cabinet fights with DeVos but they're not going to get any.

But it does exist. So whatever his plan for it, the person in charge of the department should not display such incompetence at the "job interview."

Besides one part that is LAW, that they can't get rid of, IDEA, was an area she had signicant difficulty.

Here's someone we shouldn't take seriously.

Beginning in January the battle to improve the nation’s public schools will be led by Betsy DeVos, wife of a billionaire, a woman who attended private schools when young, who kept tradition alive by sending her children to private schools, who never taught a day in her life, who never spent an hour as a school administrator, who never served a season on a local school board, either. DeVos made a name by touting school vouchers and—more importantly—raising stacks of cash for politicians.

In 2014, for example, DeVos and her husband Dick donated $1.45 million to Michigan lawmakers to defeat a bill that would have increased scrutiny of publicly-funded, for-profit charter schools.

Stephen Henderson, writing for the Detroit Free Press lat June, minced no words in his response. This was nothing less than an effort by a fabulously rich, politically connected family to buy the votes of legislators, regardless of damage that might be done to children. “We really ought to round up the lawmakers who took money to protect and perpetuate the failing charter-school experiment in Detroit,” he fumed, “sew them into burlap sacks with rabid animals, and toss them into the Straits of Mackinac.”

Sarcastic, yes—but an idea not devoid of merit.

As Forbes magazine made clear in an article five years ago, the dangers of the for-profit education model are already plain to see. The shady dealings of big for-profit colleges like the University of Phoenix fill the headlines and clog the internet. Many for-profits are actually “diploma mills” (one website warns students to steer clear of 300 fake online colleges) offering courses of little merit.[1] Their only goal is keeping students on the books till their last dime and dollar are exhausted. For-profits tricked students into signing high-interest loans, inflated claims of job placement success and preyed on veterans.

And yet, Forbes explained, at the K-12 level: “Four out of five charter schools in Michigan are run by for-profit corporations. Let that sink in a minute. This should be deeply, deeply troubling for anyone thinking about their child’s future education, or the future of this country.”

The question then is why? Why would Mr. and Mrs. DeVos spend a million plus to defeat a bill favored—until the cash explosion—even by most Republican lawmakers?

Faith in unfettered free enterprise, I suppose. Get ready for the Amway model, writ large in education!

(We’re all going to be rich!)

She did not seem to know that IDEA was a federal law that all states and those who recieved federal funding must comply with. I mean come on; that's a basic concept, and doesn't require a stance on anything to know that.

IDEA is shite. I'm sure she was aware that it's a federal mandate. If she really isn't, she won't be a good reformer as IDEA is one of the things that needs to be drastically reworked.

She's still going to get confirmed because not one republican has publicly said they're voting against her.

Education is a department no one in the GOP gives a frick about, won't be rushing to vote on and this is just paperwork issues, nothing more.

Well she sure didn't present herself as knowing that, and the "best for the job" shouldn't bomb it like that.

The proliferation of IEPs for kids who are just sociopaths is one of our fundamental problems with public education.

Well by the law. those students shouldn't technically qualify for one in those cases.

And by the implementation of the law, as guided by positions put forth by (you guessed it) the Federal Department of Education, that's how it works in real life.

I get that, but I don't know how it can be fixed at the top level in this case.

Putting someone in charge of the DOE who understands the implementation of IDEA is shite is a good start. I'm hopeful that's what DeVos is. But I have no proof of it.

Which is incredibly stupid because public schools are where our kids are being taught social, economic and historical half-truths and sometimes outright nonsense. And it's gotten so much worse even in the last 10 years.

The public school system is a breeding ground for liberal ideas. The GOP should be willing to die on that hill, not ignore it.
