This really should be the real beginning of the end for an education department at the federal level.

Fine, but if one is in charge with revamping the department, he/she should still have a basic level of knowledge about what that department does.

Surely, somebody can share her views, and also show the competence to implement them.

But here's the problem. We keep assuming that the Department of Education should have this kind of power and it flat out shouldn't. It's a fricking Johnny-come-lately power grab experiement (1980) that has failed. It needs to go brick by brick. It shouldn't exist. The only competence needed to run it, is how to shutter the department. Period.

Look at the dumbass questions Warren has been asking everyone and Kamala Harris asking CIA director about climate change and Planned Parenthood.
None of that has anything to do with this.

Sure there were dumb questions. I don't care about those.

There were straightforward questions and she botched simple policy. That's not the competence we should expect from "the best."

But it does, so even if they're going to give up the power, somebody needs to know what power they are trying to give up is in the first place.

That's fricking asinine. Let's do a little experiment. Who was the most competent secretary of education since 1980? What was the greatest achievement of the DoED since 1980? What is the mission statement of the DoED?

Trump will come out okay in this. If the senate rejects her all he will say to her is, "well I tried". He then shrugs his shoulders and gets a better qualified candidate for that position. She can't take her contributions back

I have no idea, but if I'm to believe Trump, it should be whoever becomes the secretary in 2017.

Again, the department exists, and regardless if the plan it to expand, maintain, or lessen its power, the person in charge of that needs to be competent about the very basic functions of the position to do it effectively.

Whatever the plan, to do it competently, needs someone competent in charge of implementing it.

By your own logic, you have no idea who is qualified because you can't answer rudimentary questions regarding the department.

I can't answer a subjective question about who was the "best?" I can, however, judge basic competence, based on the simple understanding of the workings of the department she would be in charge of running.

She couldn't answer those simple questions; therefore, at the very least, the person who should run it, should be able to answer them. She couldn't pass a low bar; that's troubling.

They say she is a reformer, but how can you reform something you know nothing about? She is terrible.

DeVos is a terrible pick but she probably paid top dollar for a cabinet position. I don't think Trump gives a frick who is Secretary of Education. He'll probably just ask the GOP leadership to find someone else.

Not if you're shuttering it. You don't want some bureaucratic true believer for that job.

She's not in trouble until the first Republican breaks ranks and says he/she won't support her. Has that happened yet?

Her family made a fortune off For-Profit Diploma Mills, which students received grant and aid for worthless degrees,at the expense of Taxpayers.

No, but I don't want a person who inexcusably bombed their job interview to get a job when there are other people who can competently run it.

Look at the other confirmation hearings, they didn't need to be yes men/women to be able to show basic understanding about the position.

Understanding the functions of a department =/= being a yes man/woman. It's ridiculous to even assume that is what I was advocating for; I'm advocating someone who doesn't show a inexcusable lack of competence about basic things.

After seeing her hearing, I would be surprised if she could find the office.

William Bennett. Didn't even have to Google.
