I have lost quite a bit of respect for Drew Brees because of how he handled the episode relating to his comments about kneeling. His initial comments were very reasonable and he should not have backed down. Backing down made him look like a person lacking integrity and willing to hold his finger to the wind before determining what position to take.

I do understand his backing down, however. He is playing a sport dominated by intolerant and pampered black athletes, and as the QB who depends on his black teammates for the success of the team, he felt compelled to back down to maintain good relations with his black teammates. But he was right the first time he spoke, and it appears that he backed down not because he changed his mind but rather because he succumbed to the pressure to do so.

Tom Brady and Gronk
