Plenty where I live and I never notice them anyway

What's the problem?

Of course the shithole that is the city of Dallas has 700 fewer than 10 years ago.

It ie like they resent being targets or something

My first day in the academy 16 years ago the instructor told us
" Most of y'all are here because if you weren't you'd be talking into a speaker asking people if they want fries with that. The majority here have no trade, no skill, and you're dumb enough to think you're big and bad and wanna strap a gun on and go tell people what to do. Only a very small percentage of y'all in this class will have a career longer than 5 years before you move on to something else."

He could not have been more spot on. I've seen many people come and go in 16 years. The most recent trend is that most the guys that would have been washed out in 5 years are still there. I attribute that to less people wanting to get into the profession. When your larger agencies ( BRPD, LSP, etc) have so many openings, then all the new hires with potential in your smaller agencies tend to leave after a few years to go there. In my opinion no large department should hire anyone without a degree or at least 10 yrs experience with another agency.

It's a career that you burn out quickly. Low morale, low pay, and the emotional drains take a toll on you.

I do t think there is a simple solution. More money? Sure but you have to get the politicians out of it. Louisiana Sheriff Assc is the fricking mafia. Sheriffs, even in rural areas make 100k+ and all drive new cars while their deputies are the ones doing the work, being the face of the department, and keeping that sheriff getting elected all while making around 14-16 dollars an our with shitty equipment and shitty training.

I wanna add one more thing that may not be popular here but these DAs and Judges give people too many breaks. I understand a simple possession charge or something like that but as someone that's been in the job for 16 years I can say that the same 100 people in my area account for probably 40-50% of the need for LEOs. As a society we have kinda put some self guilt on sending people to prison when in reality, many more that should be there aren't.

Step 2: lower drinking age to 18. That's another 10% of their responsibilities eliminated.

Step 3: stop using police as tax collectors via speed traps and DUI's. Police should only do those things if the neighborhood calls them and demands it to fix a problem. That's another 20%

Except now youve increased their demands regarding traffic crashes and traffic fatality investigations.

Whether you want to admit it to yourself or not the DUI enforcement in LA has worked as traffic fatalities are a fraction of what what used to be and on a general decline.

Increased education requirements and as stringent a psychological test as is possible. Neither of these will ever happen, as it would mean less police officers.

Several states have begun to screen police cadets prior to the cadets entering the academy. I'll dig around for a link. One of my residents was doing testing like this.

I agree with you on all the rest.

For the first half of the 20th century the economy of each state was built from the cities outward. As a result of white flight, the wealth generators moved to the suburbs while the cities were drained dry.

The state rules need to change to either rebuild or dismantle the cities. If you dismantle the old cities that are no longer functional the new cities will arise as needed.

This will affect outlived urban areas as well as old steel towns and the like.

Minority areas should be policed by minority police officers so they can't cry racism or targeting.

Recruit separating/retiring military personnel.

Aside from BS like speeding, DUI, jaywalking, and pot possession, 98% of people never commit crimes. The other 2% of the population are habitual criminals committing all the crimes. Have the police focus on real crime, assemble a list of the habitual criminals, and execute them.

Most new Louisiana State Police troopers have college degrees, but you're correct to some degree. Too many jobs in small and medium sized police and sheriff's departments are simply political patronage jobs.

The reduction in fatalities has more to do with the improvements in medical care, reductions in drinking in general, and greater availability of options to avoid driving when drunk (uber) than it does aggressive enforcement. DUI checkpoints, especially the no refuse variety, are nothing but an unconstitutional money grab for police departments and DA's.

You know what would teally help? A law that states tge following:
1. All fines collected from issuance of inspection sticker violations, MIP's, DUI's, speeding, seatbelt violations, and proceeds from civil asset forfeiture and police auctions go to the state and/or local highway fund, not the police, DA's office, or municipal general fund.

2. Assets may not be siezed prior to arrest and formal charge. If said charges are dropped or a non-guilty verdict is rendered, all siezed assets must be returned.

3. Any cash or bank deposits seized or frozen may be used by the defendant to pay legal representation on his behalf to defend against said charges.

4. No homes may be seized, except temporarily to gather evidence subject to a search warrant, prior to conviction if family members not involved with criminality are residing there.

5. All funding for DA's offices and Public Defenders offices must come from the same source and be funded equally by that source.

Some of the responses in this thread are odd and do not reflect what actual policwork is like. It is not just being a militia type man and a badass. (Funny, some on this board love knocking cops when something goes astray but now when the thread is about cops, they want more militarization).

Listen to the NOLA scanners out there. Here is a thread about them just this past weekend.

LINK /

Naked Man threatens neighbors.
Ex Husband attacking former wife and kids.
Unknown assailant taking pot shots at windshields of cars.
Man urinating on wall in tourist area.
Shot man found in bushes, says he knows who shot him but dies.
Man beaten for apparently no reason in French Quarter.

Almost all of these are calls that require subtle psychology not just "let's go and kick some arse" force.

And many of the weird behaviors are due to drugs so spare me the argument that they should be legalized (I guess I could agree with pot, but crack, pcp, no way).

Want better cops? Hire more of them and pay them better. I feel very safe in New York because there are cops all over and they all make like 100k a year so they are not apt to take bribes or look the other way.

Pay increases for NYPD officers are small during the early years on the job but increase significantly over time. After two-and-a-half years on the job, a police officer receives a base salary of $48,779 and a total compensation package of $53,819. Base salaries increase on an annual basis by $3,000 to $5,000 over the next few years. Halfway through a cop's sixth year on the job, his base salary jumps from $56,609 to $76,488 per year. The total compensation package of a cop with five-and-a-half years experience amounts to $90,829.
