For those who are watching, I am surprised at how honest they treated the Kennedy Administration's handling of the Vietnam conflict. It was a damning indictment of a man who usually is lionized by the press.

He screwed it up. Nixon did better than any president in that war.

Nixon was a fantastic POTUS - one of the best ever.

If he had not been cheated out of the '60 election, the world would be infinitely better place today.

Nixon is treated by every media outlet the same way Trump will be treated.

Liberals are dishonest scum

I have always blamed this mess on France and the first episode has solidified these sentiments. Also solidified the contempt I had felt early on in my political growth as a young citizen that our government was highly guilty in many aspects as well.

There are some definite comparisons between how Ho Chi Minh was treated in the beginning to the US turning and what has gone on in the Middle East with Iran, Iraq, Saudi and the rest.

I guess we can reconvene the Nixon love fest when it's revealed he conspired to sabatoge Paris peace talks when he was running for his first term as president in 68.

I wonder how much this admiration is cherry picking? Nixon was one of the only Republicans to have an honest discussion about healthcare policy around shared principles for universal coverage(he argued for a UHC system, established around mandating all employers providing a baseline of coverage to employees, sort of like Hawaii), establishing the EPA, and signing the fair labor standards act that raised the minimum wage by 40%.

By all accounts he would be a pariah in today's GOP. Then again, Trump and the present day GOP probably would of slammed Reagan for supporting a cap and trade system for acid rain, so..

Nixon was an economic leftist, for the most part. But let's be honest: the 1960s and 70s were not about economics. They were about law, order, and war. (cold and vietnam)

The political spectrum at the time was defined by those issues.

Let us also not forget that Nixon was the only reason Alger Hiss was arrested for treason.

Nixon was the most important president of the 20th century after WWII .

He opened the door to China and was the American most responsible for bringing China out of abject poverty and total government control liberating a billion people from horrible poverty in a communist command economy. China was North Korea in 1970 with no private property.

He was also a paranoid liar.

He took us off the gold standard which changed America economically in a very big way---not all good. (When we came off the standard we should have implemented a balanced budget policy of some sort.)

He was very pragmatic.

I voted republican in my first vote in 76 because he ended the draft.

Like any era, its complicated and varied, but those were certainly among the forefront issues. We also had some pretty notable domestic economic issues, that Nixon struggled with early on, and took some hits politically in the process.

I wouldn't go so far to call him an economic leftist. Unless you are using "leftist" pretty broadly. Like really broadly. After his first attempt at stimulus failed, he began to embrace more WWII era Keynesian principles. Which to be fair were more agreed upon within both parties for the moment.

But it does say something when someone like Noam Chomsky called Nixon "the last liberal president." And then a bit perplexing to hear Trumpkins praise Nixon. Who by all accounts would be one of the ones voting against ACA repeal, slamming Trump for leaving the Paris Accords or tearing apart the EPA, supporting Hillary's minimum wage increase based on the same underlying argument of needing to adjust with the times. Its hard for me to square the praise for both of these people without having to rectify some pretty big core conflicts of principles.

I don't think Nixon ever saw EPA as the agency it has become.

We do need laws that protect private property and you should not be able to damage my property with pollution you produce.
