Arrest in Joe McKnight Case

quote:

Those concerns have eased since 54-year-old Ronald Gasser was charged with manslaughter Monday night. He was in jail Tuesday and had a $500,000 bond set.

quote:

Mr. Gasser told investigators that he was "irritated" by being cut off and "set out after Mr. McKnight," Sheriff Normand said.

Will link to Sheriff's comments when I get them. Heard the audio on radio.

Was he quoting the TD thread in his press conference?

Now let the jury decide this man's guilt or innocence. Sheriff was right in his statements.

Given what I know about this guy, he is apparently a power tripping idiot.

The whole McKnight clusterfrick doesn't seem to be an exception either.

Remember when he chased down and arrested a political "tail" put on him while he was holding court in public at a coffee shop?

Couldn't find it. Looked again just now.

And the sheriff was downright inciting. If Mr. Gasser told the investigators that he was cut off and initiated the chase then that should at least warrant a night in jail.

IMO, Gasser baited McKnight into leaving his car and then shot him. Should by murder, not manslaughter.

quote:

As for the charge, Normand said the evidence in the case pointed to manslaughter, which Louisiana law states is a homicide "committed in sudden passion or heat of blood immediately caused by provocation sufficient to deprive an average person of his self-control and cool reflection."

Sorry, but I can't see what McKnight actually did such that an average person would have been provoked to kill someone.

I don't like Newell personally, and I'll never trust him politically after the tricks he pulled with JBE, but...

He's right in this case. 100%

Everyone's opinion on reasonable is different. Basically it will be a slam dunk manslaughter win for DA.

Your opinion that Gasser's intent all along was to get McKnight out of the car so he could kill him probably would be laughed at in a court of law.

Pointing out how giving false testimony to police by BLM wannabes delayed the investigation and contributed to your "(finally)" is important. They should be charged!

Talking about how BLM wannabes were trying to push elected officials into a lynching is an extremely good use of a law officer's mouth.

The public was made aware of these dangers to justice, and the accused (who is innocent until proven guilty) will get his day in court.

Not a Newell fan, but I might vote for him this time!

And of course, on 12/7/2016 you have all of the evidence. So do the police, and thus, Gasser is arrested.

A week ago you had three conflicting witness accounts of what happened, and ballistics that didn't match.

I don't agree with the Sheriff's harsh words, but he did this the right way. He'll get a conviction instead of letting a killer walk.

The articles out there have all of this information. Stop cherry picking points.

The word reasonable isn't in the law. You would have to a) identify the provocation and b) determine that it would lead to an average person killing someone.

The provocation in this case is Gasser's claim that McKnight cut him off. That led to a bizarre chase. I can't see an additional provocation that would lead me to believe that Gasser's state of mind really changed after the first incident. At that point he was already in an emotional and triggered state.

It is the Sheriff's job to lecture the public like a jerk, pounding the podium, and making a complete arse of himself on national television?

Or, is it the Sheriff's job to uphold the law? If Gasser needed to be arrested, then arrest him. And shut up about it.

If he didn't, then let him go, explain what the law says so the public will be informed, and then shut up about it.

That petulant performance yesterday was completely pathetic for an elected official and law enforcement leader. He looked exactly like what he was railing against. Have there been riots? Has there been property destruction? Anything? No. He had to deal with some comments from people. Big deal.

There was no false testimony to police that I am aware of outside of possibly Mr. Gasser.

They were internet posts. Something that every public person gets nearly every day. Using anonymous internet posts as an excuse to say every bad word in the book (something he has done on repeated occasions) is not acceptable.

Gasser sounds like an a-hole with severe anger issues. It's not surprising he was arrested for a road rage incident before.

From NOLA.com

quote:

"The wounds are not consistent with being shot from above while on the ground," Jefferson Parish Coroner Dr. Gerry Cvitanovich said, as he discussed McKnight's autopsy during a press conference Friday (Dec. 2).

The information contradicts a witness account given at the scene of McKnight's death Thursday at a Terrytown intersection. The witness had said she saw Gasser shoot McKnight twice, then stand on top of McKnight and fire once more.

think so? Who was it said a DA in state of Louisiana could get an indictment of a ham samwhich? EWE? However, this is Jefferson Parish and Newell is a Harry Lee guy.
