Well that's unfortunate. I was planning on getting back into Jars' music. They've typically made some really great stuff (third album notwithstanding) with solid Christian values laid throughout. I even recently learned one of their songs on guitar so I could sing it in church. Now I'm not sure I can do that. I can't imagine listening or promoting a Christian band who's frontman doesn't follow the Bible. He's obviously gone astray.

Caligula was said to have married a horse. Thanks for your concern.

Was it a magical horse with the ability to legally consent to marriage?

There is no tangible difference, but there is a difference in terms of social acceptance. Hence, we can't just grant the rights, we have to change the existing marriage (applicable previously only to heterosexual couples) definition.

Which is why the government should have never been involved in the first place. Your "marriage" is performed at the church of your choice and is between you, your spouse, and your deity. It offers you no protections or benefits with regards to the law of the state or country. It's simply a religious rite- such as communion or (in some cultures) circumcision. If religion is of no importance to you, then you can totally bypass it.

On the other hand, your civil union contract is between you, your spouse, and your government. This is the legal part that states your co-mingling of households, tax status, power of attorney, yadda yadda yadda. It has nothing to do with religion or morality. If you want to enter into this contract with your same sex SIBLING as a simple and efficient means to ensure that your assets don't end up in the hands of your greedy and irresponsible baby mama, then so be it. It doesn't require or even suggest that the two parties involved are boinking each other.

But all useless "shoulda-coulda-woulda" at this point, quite frankly. It probably made pretty good sense to combine the two in the past, despite the problems we see now. Not that there will ever be separation of "marriage" and "civil union" but if it DID somehow happen: yes- the fringe on both sides would STILL find something to bitch about, because... well... that's just what they do.

Don't disagree, but as you said, not much to be done about it now.

My wife and I have no deity. If the government was not involved, how would we have gotten married?

The second option. Legally speaking, it's a civil union, but you can call it Marriage if you like. Or you could call it something else entirely.

I have to say it would be utterly absurd if I didn't automatically get custody rights to my own child the minute he is born. What a pain the fricking arse for every father in the nation to have to petition for custody of their own children.

This guy should, like scripture says, consider the fruit of his actions. Saying things like this draws praise from the "world" while being divisive towards the Church...

The only reason for you to suggest this is you place too great a value on the issue of homosexuality.

(not that I think opposition to gay marriage is hateful or bigoted).

It is.

What about someone who doesn't care if gays ever get married? I'm not opposed to it, but I truly don't care. I'll sure as hell will never support their cause. Good for you if you win.

This is really a great point. Two spinsters living together could avail themselves of this status. If marriage isn't about procreation, then civil unions should be able to be entered into by anyone wishing to share living arrangements.

Or he understands that a person who ignores the plain teaching of the Bible in one spot will be prone to ignore it in other spots as well. The singer pretty much said as much.

most people read and interpret scripture wrong. I don't think scripture "clearly" states much of anything regarding morality.

Stopped reading here.

Someone needs to go read the Bible.

Yep. We don't get to pick and choose which parts we follow.

If you're waiting around to find the perfect Christian you're going to be waiting a long time.
