Maybe if he and a few other prominent leaders take this position, the gay rights movement will stop lumping all Christians together as hateful bigots (not that I think opposition to gay marriage is hateful or bigoted).

It is amazing where Christians choose to draw this line and how ridiculous the definition of "plain teaching" has to be to fit this narrative.
Homosexuality is one of the least discussed issues in the Bible and homosexuality as it exists today is not mentioned once. I guess it is far too tempting to draw that line at a point where it is easy for you to brush aside a portion of the population as less righteous than you.
