I implied that he held many beliefs which, combined with his skin color, would earn him the label of race-baiting socialist by some here if he lived today.

If he said those things now, he would be a race baiting Socialist, we live in quite a different world than he did. Thank God.

More like "thank people like Frederick Douglass".

A large part of his intended audience probably wouldn't understand half of what this self educated former slave wrote.
No bueno

his intended audience was everybody and anybody, though mostly educated whites of position and authority, including southerners ... he certainly didn't feel he was speaking primarily to blacks ...

Frederick Douglass was amazing. A true American hero. He called it like it was and confronted the blatant hypocrisy of the evil South.
He was absolutely right. It was a horrid society in many ways - the things he was addressing, for sure.
The cool thing about Douglass is that he did not throw America away altogether. He kept calling us to be who we were really supposed to be.
He was a patriot.

I too am a Frederick Douglass fan; try reading Frederick Douglass Republicans. It's a paperback from Authorhouse, ISBN 978-1-4567-5816-5; written by a pastor.

Close 2nd to Booker T.
Douglass is among the most quotable individuals in world history.
My 2 favs have been sig quotes of mine before.
--It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.
--I prayed for twenty years but received no answer until I prayed with my legs.
Bonus:
The limits of tyrants are prescribed by the endurance of those whom they oppose.
