Frederick Douglass was amazing. A true American hero. He called it like it was and confronted the blatant hypocrisy of the evil South.

The Hypocrisy of the evil south is about the dumbest statement I've heard in ages. If you think he's a hero that's fine, but your hero is a propped up invention of Radical Republicans whose goal was not to raise up the negro but to destroy fellow Americans. Quoting hypocrisy and the cool things about Douglass and his American vision is again just a revisionist view of someone who if he had his vision complete would of just as soon kill all whites and not change a system of inequality.

Oh for frick's sake. . .

Did he harbor resentment? yes

But can you blame him?

There is no evidence to support the hypothesis you present.

Yes there is a wealth of evidence to support the fact that he was the product of Radical Republican politics. Trying to say he was the baddest arse of all time is ridiculous. The need for negro heroes caused truths to be circumvented and fictitious events created. If he's a hero well I can say that you are reading from a book of fiction created for the purpose of promoting a political agenda. The apologists for the Southern way of way life need only to look at the cities now under minority control or schools post segregation to see that there is a common thread of failure.

While I buy that regarding CRA era "heroes", the same does not reflect the many from the Reconstruction era.

These are men who were actively subjugated and institutionally, educationally, socially, spiritually, economically, and physically oppressed to an absurdly tyrannical degree.

These men overcame these near-insurmountable obstacles to become some of the most influential men of their time. Many did so with a smile while still having to eat shite (see Booker T's "5-finger one hand")
