Don't confuse ability with interest.

I'm more than capable of explaining it. For you? Pass.

Its still "hearts and minds".

What do you think is going to happen so islamic fundamentalists let infidels control their tribal lands?.
They can move off and come back, still 11th century values, no womens rights, no education.

This speech was entirely about getting public to think as usa, all in this together. There is no written description of what victory is.
Just winning. Nonsense.
You need to believe. But hes got nothing. The ranking dem on house constitution committee was going to submit bill of impeachment after clumsy speech. This speech cleans it up. That was 80%. The rest is kissing up to the military.

We could have won it, ended it right after 9 11 by nuking the place to the point of making it uninhabitable. That and some assassinations and Tomahawk strikes through the right sets of windows all over Sandland would have ended all this jihad BS, in ONE DAY.

ONE FREAKING DAY. NO ONE would have dared done anything, because of what had just happened to us. The bad guys would truly fear us, and we would have sent a message that to oppose or attack us is death, not only to you but to your entire way of life.

No US troops dead and maimed because of ground action in Afghanistan. Saddam would likely still be in power and keeping that hellhole in check, because he would have caved after such strikes. No more Americans dead and crippled because of Iraq, or anyplace else.

Please tell SecDef Mattis because no one's been able to figure it out for 16 years.

Yes he was. And he was the first service member I lost while on duty. The most painful day of my life. I wear his bracelet every day to remind myself of what I am serving for.

There is a pretty good show on Netflix

about Norwegian SF being deployed there that actually touches on this. Only down part is its all subtitled.

It's been a while, my career took a detour, but I remember the Chinese building a railroad in the north.

That may have been in better, more hopeful times.

I would agree though. I wouldn't put my money into Afghanistan. The return on the cost would be awful, and I doubt anyone can bring enough order to make it work.

Best case scenario for us, the Chinese exert enough pressure on Pakistan, and devout enough resources, to bring a measure of peace.

They've got the Pakistanis to commit an entire division to their highway project.

We'll see I guess.

Do you fans of trump really see taliban just giving up? What would be reason?

We have to let go of all our ambitions, and accept Afghanistan for what it is. A wild, violent, and primitive place. A place where our values are entirely alien, and unwanted.

If we go, the Taliban will retake the south, but that's their homeland, and these are their tribes. So perhaps there's no much we could ever do about that.

So what do we do? Partition? Rump states? Make our peace with the Taliban? The state the Soviets built did fight on, after the withdrawal. It only fell when the money stopped. So perhaps we could keep funding the ANA, to perpetuate the status quo - but that's a loser.

All we've got are ugly options.

Many of the people that have served there have figured "it" out.

I went to Lackland for a basic training graduation recently and saw the war dog memorial. When I go back out that way I will visit the TACP memorial and try to get an etching of his name.
