And that is the biggest indictment of their complete lack of political acumen.

They despise the working class, and I don’t think they can get over that.

But look at how ‘sensible’ Republicans have edged closer to the Democrats since Trump took office.

That’s the trade off. Gain the working class, but lose those voters.

Personally, I have more affection for the poor.

Someone convinced a bunch of idiots that reinforcing irreconcilable poles of thought and action might have the same stabilizing effect on a nation that it did on the world order for ~45 years.
the group in red wants the govt out of their lives as much as is possible and wants everyone to leave each other alone. let me go to work, come home to my family/friends and go on a vacation once in a while. you can call that polarized but it's really not.

constantly consuming and exerting anger
the anger on the right is an effect. the cause is the anger from the left. libs always trying to tell people how awful they are. people are sick of it and they are revolting against it. see: red areas of map, rejection of anthem protest, rise of the tea party, freedom caucus, trump/maga, etc. dem party moves further to the left, backlash from the right and the map substantiates this.

People want politics to bleed into every part of life.
people on the right do NOT want this at all. if you think this, then you don't understand conservativism at all.

No respect for opposing viewpoints
again, people on the right want everyone to leave each other alone. the lack of respect comes from the left. just look at what all is going on in berkeley. those people are freakin militant. ditto antifa. ditto ivy league schools. ditto missouri. and on and on.

Only a desire for echo chambers.
when conservatives are trying to preserve the liberty that gives everyone freedom to pursue wealth and happiness, an echo chamber for that is not a bad thing.

The Democrats abandoned the working class. I don’t think it’s all that complicated.

With the exception of Trump the Republicans have half heartedly embraced those voters.

I think a lot of the issues also have to do with democratic policies being so fricking expensive - hence why longstanding blue states are far more expensive than longstanding red states and census shows red state populations are increasing at a higher rate than blue because the middle/working classes can afford to live more comfortably.

So even if they half heartedly target the working class, it's still a win.

Entitlements.

That's a term that has become commonplace over the time frame referenced in the map.

One color is for entitlements (the American way), one color is for self-improvement (the American way.) Polarizing topic.

That's more illustrative of how much democrats have completely lost rural/middle America.

Stoked by talk radio then partisan 24hour cable news was the gasoline.
