How on Earth would a demo have caused surrender when they didn't even surrender after the first NON demo?

Yes, because three whole days was such an amazingly long time to consider such a question.

Trying to give you the benefit of the doubt, but after the first mushroom cloud it should not have taken an hour to say "We surrender."

My opinion? We were going to drop the second one no matter what. We wanted our pound of flesh (ugly but true).

They could have surrendered after Hiroshima. They still planned to bleed us dry in an invasion and force us to give them favorable terms in an armistice

Except they made an actual DECISION not to surrender after the first one and in fact, it took them 7 days and Hirohito intervening to surrender after #2

This is just you talking out of your arse.

The Japanese military was rendered rudimentary.

They ran out of food, water and ammunition on Iwo and still caused casualties for weeks.

They herded civilians off of cliffs on Okinawa after they were clearly defeated.

Their defense of the Japanese home islands would have been epic. We would still be talking about it today - it would be up there with Thermopylae and Stalingrad.

In fact, it would have been the Pacific theater equivalent of Stalingrad, but about 10x as bad.

be willing to use our Nuclear weapons?

any time the US was at war. I would take war very seriously and would insist on Congressional declarations of war before going to war.

This crap we have been doing the last 13 years is crap. Bush should have had war declared on Afghanistan and nuked em if they didn't turn over OBL.

Johnson should have been impeached over Viet Nam. If we wanted to fight that war there should have been a congressional declaration.

Eisenhower threatened the use of nuclear war to end the Korean War. This came out of his archives.

You're kind of invalidating your other points. If he was war-weary, then three days was more than ample time to seek peace terms.

If I were our current president, I'd probably use it to stay in power once the citizens' rebellion could no longer be defeated by use of conventional weapons.

I would, through rhetoric make the rest of the world think that I will use nuclear weapons at any time for any reason. I would want the world to believe that I'm just waiting for them to give me an excuse to reduce their country to radioactive ash. I want those nations to be terrified of me and possibly believe me to be insane. However, I would never actually use them except as a weapon of absolute last resort.

Haven't you people learned not to argue with Rex? You can't reason and use common sense with a lunatic. As far as the question? That's not easy to answer. Too much to speculate on when and if you drop a nuke. I do think nuking the japs was the right choice. They attacked us unprovoked. Hell they deserved it just for what they did during the Bataan death march. The Japanese are vicious brutal people. They deserved everything they got. They hit us with a baseball bat at Pearl Harbor. So we shot their head off with a bazooka at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It was the right thing if for no other reason than it made them quit. I am a firm believer in that the way to win a war is to make your enemy quit. Make him not want to fight.

That's our current problem - we don't get to this point before we start nation-building - then the nation-building fails and we leave.

I would go back to the bad old days when we killed them until they begged - pleaded for that nation-building program.

United States has fought a number of "limited wars," with limited results at best.

That's because it's so "lunatic", obviously, to not want to exterminate tens of thousands of civilians.

Nazis and their Axis allies were tried at Nuremberg for "wanton destruction of cities, towns, and villages, and devastation not warranted by military necessity." We had a lot of nerve, I'd say. Hiroshima and Nagasaki were not military targets.

I would begin with the destruction of all of America's nuclear weapons at once.

America...that bastion of freedom (snicker) and lover of mankind (more snickering) still has the shame of being the only country in the world to use atomic weapons to intentionally murder innocent people.
